As the Big Island’s leading provider of inpatient and outpatient care, Hilo Medical Center delivers a full range of services and programs on our 20-acre campus. Hilo Medical Center is licensed for 157 beds for acute care and 35 beds for long-term care. We have 1,100 employees and a medical staff comprised 250 community physicians, physician assistants and Advanced Practice Registered Nurses, representing 33 specialties. As a medical center, we have a network of 9 outpatient clinics offering primary and specialty care. The hospital is a Level III Trauma Center which includes the second busiest emergency room in the state that provides 24-hour care to more than 49,000 patients annually. Hilo Medical Center has been nationally recognized for exceptional care as a “Top Performing” hospital. CMS ranked HMC 4 stars for Overall Quality, putting HMC among the top 20% of hospitals in the nation, the top 5 hospitals in the state and the only 4-star ranked hospital on Hawaii Island. WE HAD TWO MORE CHRISTMAS BABIES! Our second Christmas baby was born at 11:15 a.m to parents Kimber Uemura and Ola Demello.  Baby boy Kaulana weighed in at 6 lbs 14 ounces and 19 inches long. 

The third Christmas baby Kayzlyn was born to parents Natalie Wright and Christian Akiona of Kea’au.  The baby girl was born at 12:24 pm on 12/25/25 weighing in at 7 lbs and 3 ounces, 20.5 inches long.

Congratulations to all the families and mahalo to the staff and doctors involved in bringing these precious lives into the world!

HBMC'S 2025 CHRISTMAS BABY! He was born 12/25/25 at 00:44 to parents Blessing and Hoali’i Pali-Strong. This is baby number 5 for them (3 boys and 2 girls). Baby weighed 6 lbs 15 ounces, and is 19 ¼ inches long. The birth day was also his mom’s birthday! Here he is dressed in the outfit and hat HBMC OB Department gave him.

We are heartbroken to share the following statement on the passing of Dr. Judy FitzGerald by Dr. Kathleen Katt, Chief Medical Officer and longtime Emergency Department colleague, and our CEO Dan Brinkman:

"It is with profound sadness that we share the passing of Dr. Judy Fitzgerald, who was involved in a tragic motor vehicle accident last night that was not survivable. She is an Emergency physician colleague of mine and most importantly a dear, irreplaceable friend," says Dr. Kathleen Katt, Chief Medical Officer and long-time Emergency Department colleague.

"Dr. Fitzgerald was a long-time emergency physician and physician leader whose impact on our organization and our region cannot be overstated. From Keaʻau to Hilo Benioff Medical Center, this loss is deeply felt. She was an integral part of our Emergency Department and Urgent Care teams and played a vital role in ACLS training throughout the region.

Throughout her career, Dr. Fitzgerald generously volunteered for numerous leadership roles and was a steadfast advocate for the remarkable progress and growth our healthcare community has achieved. Her commitment to excellence, education, and patient care left a lasting legacy that will continue to influence our work and our mission.

Our hearts are with Dr. Fitzgerald’s family, friends, colleagues, and all those who had the privilege of working alongside her. We extend our deepest sympathies and ask that our community keep her loved ones—and one another—in their thoughts and prayers as we grieve this tremendous loss."

HBMC CEO Dan Brinkman says: “One of our HBMC family has passed. We are all sad. Our sincere condolences to her family and friends. She will be missed.”

Christmas came early to our Hawaii Island community. This donation of AEDs to the Hawaii County Police Department through the Hilo Benioff Medical Center Foundation. HELCO will be conducting an oil spill cleanup in front of the Medical Office Building 2 (MOB2) tomorrow, Saturday, December 6, starting at 8:30am to 4:00pm. The scope of the cleanup will involve excavating around the drainage system and the existing transformer to remove the contaminated soil and drain rock, which will subsequently be replaced with new materials.

This action is a response to the recent incident that occurred on November 19.

To ensure safety during this work, HELCO will occupy a portion of the lane and will implement traffic control measures including the necessary road work signage.
