A reflection on end-of-life care…

There is something I wish more people understood about hospice and end-of-life care.

When someone receives a terminal diagnosis and hospice is suggested, it is because the disease process is already unfolding in ways that medicine can no longer stop or reverse. By the time someone begins receiving end-of-life care, their body has already begun the work of letting go.

We cannot change the outcome, none of us holds that power. Our role, whether we are a member of the hospice team, end-of-life doulas, caregivers, or family members sitting quietly at the bedside, is to advocate, to comfort, and to reduce suffering wherever we can. We ease pain, calm symptoms, listen closely, and tend to the physical, emotional and spiritual weight that often arrives in these moments. Sometimes, when comfort replaces crisis, people are gifted a little more time, which no one could have predicted, but time is never something we can promise.

In this work, we are not the driver of the bus. The course of the illness is not ours to control. Instead, we sit beside the passenger and make sure they are not traveling alone. We show up with presence, with care, and with love.

My hope for every person who is dying is that they are cared for well, that they feel seen and held, and that their landing is soft. At the end of the day, I truly believe that anyone who is providing end-of-life care has this goal in mind.

“Some days it’s a whisper. Some days it’s a scream. And both are okay.”

Grief is not linear and each journey is unique to the individual. At Mt Carmel House, we are here to support you throughout all stages of grief and to meet you where you’re at. 💛🫶

Volunteers at Mt. Carmel House provide comfort and care to neighbors during their final days.

Hospice care isn’t about giving up—it’s about choosing comfort, dignity, and peace.

When a cure is no longer possible, hospice steps in to provide compassionate care focused on quality of life. It supports not just the patient, but the entire family—physically, emotionally, and spiritually. Whether it’s managing pain, offering emotional support, or simply being present, hospice helps people live their final chapter with grace and comfort.

Because every moment matters.

The Love Letter
By Gabby Jimenez
❤️

It isn’t written on paper

It is written in the ordinary days
in the laughter, and the lessons
in the way someone made space for you
in the way you learned to make space for them

Nothing is lost

What we carry
is not absence
it is love, still alive within us

Love remains
folded gently
inside our hearts
like a love letter
made of memories

There is no “d” at the end of love, we love them and we always will

We ❤️ our UR Hospice team!

Honoring the Power of Teamwork in Hospice Care
Every day, our Hospice Team comes together with one purpose: to bring comfort, dignity, and peace to the individuals and families we serve. Hospice is truly an interdisciplinary effort; nurses, social workers, spiritual care providers, aides, volunteers, and support staff all working together, guided by best practices and a shared commitment to compassionate care.
The everyday moments of collaboration, like a hospice social worker huddling with teammates to plan support for a patient and their family, are where the heart of our mission shines. These conversations, acts of coordination, and moments of shared purpose ensure every individual receives the comfort, understanding, and care they deserve.
We are grateful for this incredible team and the dedication they bring to making every moment count.
Together, we uphold the mission of compassion and dignity in every step of the journey.

As we packed away our Christmas decorations, it felt wrong to take down our memorial tree. The decision was made to keep it up year round and decorate it seasonally. It’s a lovely reminder for all who come through our doors why we do what we do. ♥️

A huge thank you to our volunteer, Marilyn, for making our seasonal bows and tree decor. 🎀 And to our aide, Dawn, for donating her tree to our home! 🌲 We are blessed to be surrounded by such generous and caring individuals.

When someone receives a terminal diagnosis, or begins to decline from age or illness, something devastating often happens quietly, beneath the surface: they begin to lose their autonomy. Suddenly, everyone around them is telling them what they should feel, how they should think, how to cope, how to fight, even how to die. Grief, hope, acceptance, these are deeply personal experiences, but they often get drowned out by well-meaning voices trying to make sense of it all. In the process, the person at the center of it, the one living it, is often silenced.

We must do better. We have to protect a person’s right to decide what this chapter of their life looks like, no matter how uncomfortable it makes us. Their words, their wishes, and their boundaries matter up until their very last breath. Even if their choices don’t align with what we would want, they are still theirs to make. Dying is not something we get to do for someone else. What we can do is honor them with our presence, our listening, and our unwavering respect.

This is why conversation matters, real conversation. Talk to the people you love about what’s most important to them. Ask them what they want, how they feel, and what they fear. Be the person who listens in a way that makes them feel heard. And when they tell you, don’t rush to fix it or change it, just hold it. Carry their words like something sacred. Because in the end, the greatest act of love might not be saving someone, it might be showing up exactly as they have asked you to, even when your heart wants something different.
