Dry eye is not simply a comfort issue — it is a chronic inflammatory disease of the ocular surface.

Common symptoms include:
• Burning or stinging
• Fluctuating or blurry vision
• Excess tearing
• Eye fatigue
• Grittiness

Artificial tears may temporarily relieve symptoms, but they do not address underlying gland dysfunction or inflammation.

Advanced diagnostics allow us to evaluate tear quality, gland health, and inflammation — so treatment can be targeted rather than temporary.

Understanding the root cause leads to more meaningful relief.

This infrared scan evaluates the oil-producing glands in your eyelids.

These glands are responsible for stabilizing the tear film and preventing evaporation. When they become blocked or begin to atrophy, patients often experience:

• Burning
• Fluctuating vision
• Excess tearing
• Contact lens intolerance
• Eye fatigue

Dry eye is not just about tears — it’s often about gland health.

Early detection allows us to intervene before permanent gland loss occurs.

Fun eye fact 👁️
Blue eyes don’t contain blue pigment.

They appear blue because of:
• Low melanin
• Light scattering in the iris
• Eye structure

That’s why every blue eye looks different.

March is save your vision month!
Many eye diseases develop slowly and without obvious symptoms.

Conditions like:
• Glaucoma
• Macular degeneration
• Diabetic eye disease
• Chronic dry eye

can progress quietly before vision is noticeably affected.

A comprehensive eye exam evaluates more than how clearly you see — it assesses the overall health of your eyes.

Prevention and early detection are the foundation of long-term vision health.

If it has been over a year since your last exam, this is a great time to schedule one.

Who is at risk for age-related macular degeneration? 👁️

ARMD develops from a combination of genetics, aging, and lifestyle factors—and many people don’t realize they’re at risk.

Common risk factors include:
• Increasing age
• Family history of macular degeneration
• Smoking or past smoking
• Cardiovascular disease and high blood pressure
• Poor nutrition or low intake of antioxidants
• Prolonged UV and blue light exposure

Having one or more risk factors doesn’t mean vision loss is inevitable—but it does mean regular retinal exams are especially important.

February is Age-Related Macular Degeneration Awareness Month—the perfect time to understand your risk and protect your vision.

😴💤 Why Sleep Matters for Your Eyes

Your eyes heal while you sleep.
When you don’t get enough rest, your eyes don’t get the chance to reset and repair — and that can lead to dry, irritated, burning, or gritty eyes.

🌙 What happens when you don’t sleep enough?
• Reduced tear production
• Increased tear evaporation
• More inflammation on the eye surface
• Worsening dry eye symptoms
• Eye strain, redness, and blurry vision

👀 Good sleep supports:
✔ Healthy tear film
✔ Reduced eye inflammation
✔ Better blinking and oil gland function
✔ Clearer, more comfortable vision

If you’re dealing with chronic dryness, redness, or tired eyes, sleep quality may be part of the problem — not just screen time.

✨ At Northgate Vision & Dry Eye Clinic, we look at the whole picture when treating dry eye, including sleep habits, screen use, and overall health.

📞 Call us to schedule a dry eye evaluation and start feeling better — day and night.

Treatment for age-related macular degeneration depends on the stage and type of disease. 👁️

Management may include:
• Close monitoring with advanced retinal imaging
• Nutritional support when appropriate (AREDS-based supplements)
• Lifestyle guidance to reduce risk factors
• Referral to a retinal specialist for advanced or wet ARMD

While ARMD has no cure, early detection and proper management can slow progression and help preserve vision.

February is Age-Related Macular Degeneration Awareness Month—and awareness starts with understanding your options.

💧 How much water should you really be drinking?

A good general goal is ½ your body weight (in pounds) in ounces per day — more if you’re active, sweating, or spending lots of time on screens.

When you’re dehydrated, your body prioritizes vital organs — not your tear film. That means fewer tears, faster evaporation, and worsening dry eye symptoms like burning, redness, and blurred vision.

Hydration alone won’t cure dry eye, but it’s an important foundation for healthier, more comfortable eyes.

Dry, irritated eyes? Let’s talk about what your eyes actually need.

Kids’ eyes aren’t just smaller versions of adult eyes — they actually let significantly more UV light reach the retina ☀️👁️ Because their natural lenses are clearer, children are more vulnerable to long-term UV damage starting at a young age. That’s why UV protection in glasses and sunglasses is so important, even on cloudy days. Protecting young eyes now helps support healthier vision for life.

How is age-related macular degeneration detected? 👁️

Macular degeneration often begins without noticeable symptoms, which is why routine eye exams are so important.

Detection may include:
• A dilated retinal exam
• Advanced retinal imaging (like OCT)
• Evaluation of subtle changes in the macula
• Monitoring risk factors such as age, family history, and smoking

Many patients are surprised to learn changes can be present before vision is affected.

Early detection allows us to monitor progression, guide lifestyle and nutrition choices, and protect vision long-term.

February is Age-Related Macular Degeneration Awareness Month—the perfect reminder not to skip your eye exam.
