"A patient on Hope 4 was struggling—not just medically, but emotionally. The patient had been resistant to various treatments and medications, and that day, refused a stress test.

Assigned to care for the patient was Rubainah, known affectionately around Hope 4 as “Bai.” Concerned, Bai gently asked the patient why they didn’t want to proceed. With tears in their eyes, the patient quietly admitted they didn’t own a pair of shoes and would attempt the test wearing slippers.

Without a moment’s hesitation, Bai asked for the patient’s shoe size. “Eight,” the patient replied. Bai smiled and said, “Perfect.” She then offered the patient her own shoes and took the patient’s slippers in exchange, holding onto them until the test was complete.

This simple, selfless act speaks volumes. It wasn’t just about shoes. It was about dignity, compassion, and meeting someone where they were. Bai’s kindness turned a moment of vulnerability into one of trust and healing.

This is what a Covenant Health caregiver looks like." - Katie Attebury, PCA at Covenant Medical Center, Hope 4

Thank you to acute care RN, Bai, for going above and beyond to ensure this patient received the care and procedures they needed. Not only did she lend her shoes, she provided comfort and support. Her generosity reminds us that healing begins with compassion.

We’re proud to announce the launch of the Covenant Health Lung Nodule Clinic at Pulmonary Associates, designed to streamline care for patients with pulmonary nodules and improve lung cancer outcomes through early detection and timely intervention. Operating Monday afternoons, the clinic ensures high-risk patients are seen within a week of nodule detection and evaluated by our pulmonary experts, Dr. Ben Batson, Dr. Ximena Solis, Dr. Brian Williams, and Dr. Andrew Shakespeare, using advanced diagnostics and minimally invasive techniques. In collaboration with Covenant Health’s Joe Arrington Cancer Center, patients will receive quick referrals to support early treatment decisions and ensure the highest quality of care.

Since launching in June, the clinic has already served more than 140 patients, reflecting our commitment to proactive, specialized care and the potential for expanded hours in the future. Early detection saves lives, and we’re honored to bring this vital service to our community.

Alyssa is a kindergarten teacher, wife, and foster mom, who loves karaoke nights, traveling, and spending time with her loved ones. Just after her 29th birthday, her life took an unexpected turn.

While reading in bed, Alyssa felt a lump. Doctors initially believed it was a benign tumor. However, a sonogram revealed two infected lymph nodes and a biopsy confirmed she has triple negative breast cancer, a fast-growing, aggressive form more common in younger women. Alyssa felt overwhelmed by emotions after her diagnosis –“fear, anger, distraught”– and first questioning, “Am I going to survive this?”

After finishing her school year, Alyssa began treatment at Covenant Health’s Joe Arrington Cancer Center under the care of Dr. Ibrahim Shalaby. She’s completed 14 of 16 rounds of chemotherapy and is preparing for surgery soon.

Alyssa is grateful for her care team at JACC who have supported her every step of the way. “Everyone from the valet, greeters, office workers, nurses, and doctors have been so kind and helpful.”

Through the hardest season of her life, she’s leaned on her faith, family, friends, and the support of her community. “The moments I remember most are the ones where such overwhelming support has been shown to me and my family.”

Still, the journey hasn’t been easy. “Losing my hair was something I never wanted but unfortunately unavoidable. It’s hard to look in the mirror and see sometimes because I no longer recognize who is staring back at me.”

“I used to joke about how I am the weakest person I know. Man did cancer change that.” One quote that’s stuck with her: “You never know how strong you are until being strong is your only choice.” — Bob Marley

Alyssa’s message to other women is: “Check yourself. Self-discovery saves lives.” And to those newly diagnosed with breast cancer: It’s really hard, but you can do it. Some days are going to be great and others are going to be tough, but you are strong. Not because you want to be but because you have to be to live.”

Because of the incredible partnership and generosity of our community, we raised over $400,000 at our annual House Concert for Covenant Health’s Joe Arrington Cancer Center to support local cancer patients and their families. 💙

More than half of the proceeds will directly fund cooling caps and comfort programs, helping patients preserve dignity and a sense of normalcy during treatment.

A special thanks to our presenting sponsor, Merrill Lynch, our gracious hosts, the Cash Family, and talented performers, Cleto Cordero and Kaitlin Butts.

To our community, Dusty Thompson is a beloved pastor.
To our team at Covenant Health, he is Dr. Amy Thompson’s other half.
To our caregivers at Joe Arrington Cancer Center, he’s a courageous patient.

In June, Dusty was diagnosed with Stage 4 B-cell lymphoma. It began with back pain, fatigue, and night sweats — symptoms that initially pointed to a virus. But after lab work and an admission to the Covenant Medical Center Emergency Department, imaging revealed lesions throughout his spine. A biopsy confirmed the cancer diagnosis, and a follow-up PET scan showed it had spread to bones across his body.

Dusty began treatment quickly, starting with a week of inpatient chemotherapy before transitioning to outpatient care at Covenant Health’s Joe Arrington Cancer Center. He has now completed six rounds of chemo.

Though he’s spent years close to healthcare through Amy’s leadership at Covenant Health, becoming a patient himself brought a new perspective.

Reflecting on those first few days, Dusty shared, “It’s kind of like you think it might be… really, really hard.” But he continues to fight every day, leaning on his faith to carry him through.

He’s grateful for his care team at JACC and the ability to receive advanced care close to home. “To be a patient here and to see what it means for my family to get this kind of quality care right here is so significant.”

We’re proud to walk alongside Dusty and will continue to support him every step of the way.

Caregivers from Covenant Health Hobbs Hospital recently volunteered with WHI (Weekend Hunger Initiative) Hobbs, helping pack care packages for children in need. This local nonprofit plays a vital role in the community by providing nutritious, shelf-stable, and kid-friendly food to school-aged children experiencing food insecurity, ensuring they have meals over the weekend when school resources aren't available. This effort is a meaningful reflection of our mission in action: caring for our community with compassion and purpose.
