"We recently had a patient on the unit who had a colostomy placed during surgery due to cancer. The patient was very nervous about this life-changing surgery. She was scared and anxious about performing ostomy care on her own. During her stay, Dawn visited the patient every day, taking time to go through the steps carefully until the patient understood. On the last day of her stay, she immediately became very anxious about going home alone. Her ostomy had been having trouble sealing the previous day. When I called Dawn and expressed the patient's concerns, she came in on her day off to reassure the patient and spent more time going over everything and making sure she had enough supplies to make it through. Knowing the patient did not have adequate funding for additional supplies that might be needed, she set the patient up with appropriate resources to safely go home. The patient, smiling on the way out, left feeling confident in her own skills thanks to Dawn and her commitment to patient care." – Kristen Parker, RN, Covenant Medical Center (Mercy 9)

Thank you to oncology nurse, Dawn Sanders, for easing the way for this patient during a challenging time. Your compassion and dedication made her feel supported and gave her peace of mind to manager her care with confidence.

Stache up and strike a pose! 🥸

Our caregivers and Red Raiders are rocking their staches in style, but behind every mustache is a mission: sparking conversations about men's health. This November, we’re growing awareness through Movember, a movement focused on prostate cancer, testicular cancer, mental health, and su***de prevention.

Thank you for teaming up with us to make difference!

Covenant Health is proud to announce the expansion of our epilepsy program with the addition of Responsive Neurostimulation (RNS), a breakthrough technology for patients with hard-to-control epilepsy.

Led by Neurosurgeon Dr. Robert Scranton and Neurologist Dr. Tulio Bueso, RNS continuously monitors brain activity, detects early signs of a seizure, and delivers gentle electrical stimulation to help prevent it before it starts. This cutting-edge treatment, combined with an individualized care approach, improves seizure control and enhances quality of life for patients.

Covenant Medical Center is the only hospital in the region offering both RNS and Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS), bringing advanced neurological care to West Texas and eastern New Mexico.

After smoking for more than 50 years and losing her mother to small cell lung cancer, Sheila knew she was at a high risk for lung cancer. When her cardiologist recommended a low-dose CT scan, she didn’t hesitate.

Under the care of her pulmonologist, Dr. Mark Johnson, the scans became routine for Sheila until one showed a small growth in a nodule. A biopsy revealed adenocarcinoma, a type of lung cancer often treatable with surgery. But during surgery to remove the tumor, her surgeon discovered something far more aggressive: small cell lung cancer in her lymph nodes–a type that spreads quickly and is often fatal if caught late.

Because Sheila acted early, her doctors were able to move fast. Under the care of Dr. Ibrahim Shalaby, she began treatment immediately. Her treatment days included an intensive regimen of two rounds of radiation and chemotherapy in between sessions.

Despite the severity of her cancer, her treatment was successful. She completed radiation first, then finished chemo on her birthday and rang the bell to celebrate being cancer-free. Today, she’s doing great and continues regular surveillance with CT scans and MRIs.

Her proactive approach to screening meant her cancer was caught early and treated successfully. Sheila encourages anyone at high risk to start screening early. She shares, “A lot of people are scared to know, and that’s the worst thing they could do. I’m still here because I did what I did when I did it.”

"A patient on Hope 4 was struggling—not just medically, but emotionally. The patient had been resistant to various treatments and medications, and that day, refused a stress test.

Assigned to care for the patient was Rubainah, known affectionately around Hope 4 as “Bai.” Concerned, Bai gently asked the patient why they didn’t want to proceed. With tears in their eyes, the patient quietly admitted they didn’t own a pair of shoes and would attempt the test wearing slippers.

Without a moment’s hesitation, Bai asked for the patient’s shoe size. “Eight,” the patient replied. Bai smiled and said, “Perfect.” She then offered the patient her own shoes and took the patient’s slippers in exchange, holding onto them until the test was complete.

This simple, selfless act speaks volumes. It wasn’t just about shoes. It was about dignity, compassion, and meeting someone where they were. Bai’s kindness turned a moment of vulnerability into one of trust and healing.

This is what a Covenant Health caregiver looks like." - Katie Attebury, PCA at Covenant Medical Center, Hope 4

Thank you to acute care RN, Bai, for going above and beyond to ensure this patient received the care and procedures they needed. Not only did she lend her shoes, she provided comfort and support. Her generosity reminds us that healing begins with compassion.

Caregivers from Covenant Health Hobbs Hospital recently volunteered with WHI (Weekend Hunger Initiative) Hobbs, helping pack care packages for children in need. This local nonprofit plays a vital role in the community by providing nutritious, shelf-stable, and kid-friendly food to school-aged children experiencing food insecurity, ensuring they have meals over the weekend when school resources aren't available. This effort is a meaningful reflection of our mission in action: caring for our community with compassion and purpose.
