Positive Parenting Starts with Showing Up
Fatherhood is not about being perfect — it is about being present.
For fathers navigating substance use recovery, parenting can feel overwhelming. There may be guilt, missed moments, or difficult conversations. But positive parenting is built on what you do today — not who you were yesterday.
Through the 24/7 Dads program offered by the Community Drug Coalition, we continue to have real conversations about growth, responsibility, and leadership in the home. This week, we discussed what it truly means to be a man. Being a man is not about pride, control, or avoiding emotion. It’s about responsibility, integrity, accountability, and protecting and providing — emotionally and physically — for your family. True strength is shown in self-control, growth, and the willingness to change.
Here are a few principles that matter:
• Consistency builds trust. Small, reliable actions — a phone call, attending a game, keeping your word — rebuild connection.
• Emotional regulation matters. Children learn how to handle stress by watching how you handle yours. Recovery tools strengthen both sobriety and parenting.
• Accountability models strength. Owning mistakes and making amends teaches resilience and responsibility.
• Quality over perfection. Ten intentional minutes of focused time can mean more than hours of distracted presence.
Substance use does not define your ability to be a loving, effective father. Growth does. Healing does. Showing up does.
At the Community Drug Coalition, we believe strong fathers build strong families, and strong families build strong communities.
If you’re a dad doing the work — keep going. Your presence matters more than you know.
