A herniated disc occurs when the soft “cushiony” part of the spinal disc (which sits between the bones or vertebrae in the spine and acts as a “shock absorber”) begins to move outside of the area it was anatomically meant to be in. These discs can press on nerves near the spine and cause radiating pain in the hip or buttocks and into the legs.
