Welcome to Part 2 of Thriving With Anxiety Using DBT

Today we’re looking at black and white thinking. A common cognitive distortion that leads up to see the world and/or ourselves as either too good or too bad. We are either incredible or complete failures. This form of thinking often leads to anxiety as our perception of the world has become rigid and inflexible.

Using dialectical reframing we can begin to learn to see the world in “shades of grey”. A perspective that allows us to hold space for both black and white thoughts, and find the middle ground. Its not about deciding between the two, rather, its about holding space for both.

Once you can start to practice this skill daily, you begin to thrive with your anxiety. Come back on Friday when we look at mindfulness 🧘🏽‍♂️

This veterans day, we extend our respect and admiration for all those that served or are currently serving.

Thriving with Anxiety using DBT, Part 1 of 4.

Each Video, we will teach you how to use a new DBT skill to help you thrive with anxiety. Its not something you can get rid of, its something you have to learn to live with. Today we look at our “should” thoughts.

We are often plagued by our should thoughts. This is a reflection of us fighting against reality since things are going the way we want them to. However, this battle between reality and our should thoughts creates more anxiety rather than actually easing it.

To thrive with this anxiety we need to practice radical acceptance. Here is how you do it.

Bringing in skills from dialectical behavioral therapy, taught by our very own Dr.Amy, who leads our DBT groups.

If you are interested in learning more about DBT and want to sign up for our DBT group therapy program, comment DBT and we’ll help you get set up.

Tune in for part 2 where we discuss black and white, all or nothing thinking.

Dear Athletes,
People won’t hesitate to tell you about your performance, your technique and everything else under the sun. However, here are some sentences you do need to hear that no one will tell you.
Your mental health matters, you’re an individual before you’re an athlete. Your performance doesn’t dictate your worth.
We see the work you put in behind the scenes and we are here for you!

Ever feel paralyzed by things outside your influence? To achieve Peak Performance, you must shift your Mindset and manage your Focus. This simple 3-step framework helps athletes and professionals stay centered on what truly matters.

Swipe and save this guide to keep your attention on your Controllables:

1️⃣ IDENTIFY: Clearly separate the In Control factors (your Effort, Attitude, Preparation) from the Out of Control factors (officials, opponents, environment). This step defines your Sphere of Influence.

2️⃣ BECOME AWARE: After any Setback or moment of Frustration, interrupt the spiral by asking: “WHERE WAS MY FOCUS?” This simple question is the foundation of Self-Awareness and allows for immediate correction.

3️⃣ CREATE A RESET CUE: Implement a fast, physical Mental Reset to bring your Attention back to the present. My cue is the “Pause Button” on my hand; other effective methods include a Deep Breath or a quick Fist Bump.

The Key Takeaway: Focusing on your controllables is the most powerful method for building Mental Toughness and enhancing Resilience. Stop reacting to chaos and start dictating your Action.

Our Story

Clinicians at the Lukin Center specialize in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) for a variety of concerns in individuals of all ages. CBT is a problem-focused, goal-directed type of treatment that focuses on the dynamic relationships between thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. The purpose of CBT is to help you learn how to better manage your concerns so that ultimately you can effectively address them independently. To achieve this end, you and your therapist will actively work together to address your concerns. Specialty services include targeting Men's Issues, Couple's Therapy, and therapy with Children and Adolescents.
