The WHI (Women’s health initiative) was abruptly halted and data initially presented decades ago when I was in medical school. It was a questionable study with older women given non bio-identical hormones and the early data was widely misrepresented by investigators and the media. Nonetheless it scared women and doctors alike from routinely using menopausal hormones for decades. A whole generation of women suffered through menopausa stripped of their right to use hormones. Well now, thanks to so many ob/gyn, urology and sexual health physicians out there who have been fighting for the truth and for women’s health we finally are seeing the tides turn.

Here are just a few who deserve so much for the their efforts.

“Randomized studies show that women who initiate HRT within 10 years of the onset of menopause (generally before age 60) have a reduction in all-cause mortality and fractures. Women may also reduce their risk of cardiovascular diseases by as much as 50%, Alzheimer’s disease by 35%, and bone fractures by 50 to 60%. Though the starting time of HRT and duration of use are decisions made between the prescriber and the individual patient, the FDA’s labeled recommendation will be to start HRT within 10 years of menopause.”

I’ve been using low dose naltrexone for over a decade in many with chronic pain syndromes, chronic fatigue, a variety of autoimmune conditions and more recently long covid. For some it’s a miracle. Generally I’ve found it very well tolerated. I’ve had SO MANY patients over the years ask me why it’s not part of standard medicine and why they’d never heard of it before. It’s been studied as far back as the 1980s and I’m not sure why it’s taken the greater medical community so long to acknowledge its potential. Better late than never!

Small study but the data in table 3 is worth looking at. The older adults with higher starting inflammatory markers and cytokines dropped significantly in 16 weeks. And anti-inflammatory IL-10 increased. With an extraordinarily safe intervention. And it tastes good bc glycine is a naturally sweet amino acid. I take it before bed bc glycine is also very calming and sleep supportive.

Borrowed this pic from . Recently found out I have a torn meniscus and this boswellia and celery seed combination has made all the difference in my pain and stiffness. I am truly blown away. No nsaids or acetaminophen needed thus far and I am able to exercise (modified to avoid further injury) while I await intervention. Just a post to say thank you to a company putting in the research to make exceptional products. Well done 🤩👌👏👏

I think it’s important for people to know there is no guarantee what you buy off Amazon is direct from the manufacturer and counterfeit supplements in particular are rampant. For important health related items I really don’t recommend Amazon as a reliable resource.

Also, I’m not the biggest fan of ChatGPT however it did make posting this information easy. I have found that the precise way in which you phrase or ask a question can significantly alter the answer you get. So if you do use this resource, maybe don’t take the first answer at face value.

Risks of prebiotics and probiotics are nominal. Benefits likely clinically significant. Can we say the same for any of the prescriptions we use for PCOS?

For the record I use both. Maximize all the tools in our collective tool boxes.

“The prebiotics or synbiotics supplementation significantly reduced weight, BMI, WC, TG, LDL-C, HDL-C, hs-CRP, MDA, and total testosterone and increased HDL-C and TAC. Prebiotic supplementation for small periods (8 weeks) may have caused a significant improvement in obesity indices, lipid profile, and FPG. Probiotics led to significant reductions in insulin, HOMA-IR, and TG. Therefore, prebiotics or synbiotics can be recommended as a therapeutic approach for improving health outcomes in PCOS patients.”

Larazotide is an 8 amino acid peptide taken orally, which was first studied for potential benefits in the celiac population. It antagonizes zonulin proteins that regulate tight junctions in the GI tract. Basically that means it can help heal a hyper-permeable intestinal lining (leaky gut). I’ve used it personally, with family and patients.

In this just published phase 2a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial 12 children with MISC were treated with adjuvant larazotide therapy four times daily for 3 weeks. There was 24 weeks of safety monitoring. No larazotide-related adverse events were reported.

“The concentration of SARS-CoV-2 spike protein antigen in blood samples correlated with inflammatory markers, including interferon-γ and interleukin-6 and with gastrointestinal symptoms. Children treated with larazotide displayed faster resolution of gastrointestinal symptoms, faster clearance of spike antigen, and a faster return to usual activities.”

This is a small study. More are warranted. However from an overall risk benefit assessment it a very promising. Based on its mechanism of actions and the data we have to date, there are no downsides currently known.
