Having struggled with acne myself, I know how frustrating it is when it feels like your skin just won’t clear; no matter what you try. If your acne keeps coming back, here are a few reasons that might be holding you back 👇
1. You’re not washing your makeup brushes or changing your pillowcases enough.
Dirty brushes and pillowcases collect oil, bacteria, and old makeup, which then get pressed right back into your skin. That’s an easy way to clog pores and trigger breakouts. Try washing brushes weekly and swapping pillowcases every 1–2 weeks (more often if you’re acne-prone).
2. You’re over-exfoliating.
More exfoliation doesn’t mean clearer skin. Scrubs, acids, and exfoliating tools used too often can damage your skin barrier, causing irritation, redness, and even more breakouts. Gentle exfoliation 1–2 times a week is plenty, your skin needs time to heal.
3. You’re touching and picking at your skin too much.
Hands carry bacteria, and picking pushes that bacteria deeper into your pores. This can make pimples last longer and leave behind dark spots or scars. I know it’s hard, but leaving your skin alone as much as possible really helps.
4. You’re using way too many products.
Layering tons of serums and actives can overwhelm your skin and make acne worse. Mixing too many strong ingredients can cause irritation and breakouts instead of clearing them. Simple routines = happy skin. Cleanser, moisturizer, and one treatment is often enough.
5. Your gut might be inflamed.
Your skin reflects what’s going on inside your body. Gut imbalance and inflammation can show up as stubborn acne. Focus on fiber, probiotics tailored for skin health, whole foods, and lots of water. What you eat matters just as much as what you put on your face.
