Big Blue Nation, has another cheerleader in heaven cheering on the Cats. Barry Allen Hines, a forever UK basketball fan, passed away on April 18th, in Plano, Texas surrounded by his family. Barry was born in Hodgenville, Kentucky and lived his early life in Magnolia with his brother Tommy Hines attending Magnolia Elementary School and LaRue County High School where he participated in the marching band and jazz quartet.
He is preceded in death by his father, Robert Thomas Hines and mother, Helen Peace Hines. Barry attended Western Kentucky University where he met the love of his life for over 60 years, Carlette Davenport. They were married in Greenville, Kentucky in November, 1968. Upon graduating with a BS in business, Barry and Carlette moved to Cincinnati, Ohio where they started a family in 1972 with the birth of their son Christopher and daughter Jennifer in 1975. Jennifer passed away after a challenging battle with Leukemia in 1982. Barry held different positions in the Cincinnati and Dayton areas before moving to Jackson Mississippi where he worked at Clorox International as a Production/Warehouse supervisor until retiring in 2010.
Family was always his primary focus, "Don't mess with my family, my food, or my money", and they moved from Jackson to Katy Texas and later Edmond Oklahoma to be closer to Chris, daughter-in-law Amy, and their three kids Mason, Carter and Maddie. "Pop" and "Gram" always inseparable, attended all the various school and sporting events where they both spent their time in support of their grandkids. Barry, always the agriculturalist, loved spending time in the yard planting various trees and bushes or just piddlin'.
My father was a very loving man, always the smartest man I knew, and could fix most anything mechanical, at least that is what he told me. The consummate weatherman, he talked to his brother Tommy daily about the weather, their grandkids, and the UK basketball team, "Calipari needed to go". Dad loved my family, but his partner in crime was my mom. She kept him straight with three little words, "Barry that's enough" and he would give that little all knowing giggle that we will miss with all our hearts.
Dad's faith was a steady and enduring presence throughout his life. He possessed a deep understanding of the Bible and knew God. Yet, it was often the quiet, beautiful moments in nature that brought his beliefs to life. One early morning, as the sky was lit with brilliant shades of pink and rose and the sun began to peak above the horizon, he looked at me and said, "This is the God that I know."
The family will have a private graveside service at Red Hill Cemetery in Hodgenville.
Bennett-Bertram Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
