WHAT IS "GROUNDING"? Grounding is a coping strategy that is designed to "ground" you in, or immediately connect you with, the present moment.
Grounding is a practice that can help you pull away from flashbacks, unwanted memories, and negative or challenging emotions.

Grounding techniques are exercises that may help you refocus on the present moment to distract yourself from anxious feelings. You can use grounding techniques to help create space from distressing feelings in nearly any situation, but they’re especially helpful for improving:
- anxiety
- well-being
- stress
- depression
- mood
- post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
- dissociation

COMMENT BELOW: What is your favorite grounding technique?

Stress is our body’s response to pressure. Many different situations or life events can cause stress. It is often triggered when we experience something new or unexpected that threatens our sense of self or when we feel we have little control over a situation.
We all deal with stress differently. Our ability to cope can depend on our genetics, early life events, personality and social and economic circumstances.
When we encounter stress, our body produces stress hormones that trigger a fight or flight response and activate our immune system. This helps us respond quickly to dangerous situations.

COMMENT BELOW your favorite way to de-stress and unwind!

We all have one — an inner voice that expresses criticism, frustration or disapproval about our actions. It might sound like, “you should,” “why didn’t you?” “what’s wrong with you?,” or “why can’t you get it together?” The actual self-talk is different for each of us, as is its frequency or intensity.

This critical inner voice is formed out of painful early life experiences in which we witnessed or experienced hurtful attitudes toward us or those close to us. As we grow up, we unconsciously adopt and integrate this pattern of destructive thoughts toward ourselves and others.

What this inner critic sounds like for each of us will be very different. Psychologist Jay Early has actually suggested that there are 7 different types of inner critic that can reside within us:
1. The Perfectionist
2. The Task Maker
3. The Inner Controller
4. The Guilt Tripper
5. The Destroyer
6. The Underminer
7. The Molder

Awareness is the first step in recognizing, healing, and integrating your inner critic.
COMMENT BELOW which of these critical voices sound most like the one you sometimes hear in your own mind.

“Reframing” is a technique used in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) to identify automatic thoughts and replace them with more balanced thoughts. The practice of identifying and stopping these distortions/negative thoughts is crucial in breaking the cycles of stress, anxiety, and depression that so many individuals find themselves stuck in.

In his book, Feeling Good, Dr. David Burns highlights common thought patterns or cognitive distortions that can get us stuck in negative emotions.

-- All or Nothing thinking (Seeing everything as either a strict success/failure. For example, stating that you will never overcome your anxiety after one coping technique didn’t work.)
-- Discounting the positive (Disregarding positive experiences in order to justify harmful patterns.)
--Jumping to conclusions (Making assumptions about what will happen or what others will think based on minimal or no evidence.)
-- Emotional reasoning (Coming to far-fetched or untrue conclusions based purely on emotion.)

SMILING CAN BOOST YOUR MENTAL HEALTH, AND THE ATTITUDE OF THOSE AROUND YOU! :)

When you smile, your brain releases tiny molecules called neuropeptides to help fight off stress. Then other neurotransmitters like dopamine, serotonin and endorphins come into play too. The endorphins act as a mild pain reliever, whereas the serotonin is an antidepressant.

Plus, one Swedish study suggests that we can’t help but react with a smile of our own when we see someone smiling — so it’s an all-out infectious loop of happiness.*

Personal boundaries are a necessary act of self-love.

Setting boundaries is an important part of establishing one’s identity and is a crucial aspect of mental health and wellbeing.

Boundaries can be physical or emotional, and they can range from being loose to rigid, with healthy boundaries often falling somewhere in between.

What kind of boundaries have you set lately?

LET'S TALK ATTACHMENT STYLES!
The 4 attachment styles help us learn more about our relationships, traits and characteristics. The first step is to get acquainted with the basics and understand the different attachment styles.

According to psychiatrist and psychoanalyst John Bowlby, your early relationship with your caregivers sets the stage for how you will build relationships as an adult.
Essentially, our adult attachment style is thought to mirror the dynamics we had with our caregivers as infants and children.

There are four adult attachment styles:
1.) Secure
2.) Anxious (also referred to as Preoccupied)
3.) Avoidant (also referred to as Dismissive)
4.) Disorganized (also referred to as Fearful-Avoidant)

Do you know your relationship attachment style? Comment below!
