A human soul can take on a lot of struggle. We are amazing creations with great strength and potential.
In my profession, I have witnessed many lives of pain and suffering. Often, we hold onto offenses that happened years ago, not realizing that those who hurt us don't even know we were hurt. It's similar to driving in a snowstorm when someone rushes past you, causing you to skid off the road and into a ditch. They keep flying down the road, never giving you a thought, while you're upside down in the ditch with your wheels spinning. That one incident can stay locked inside of you and cause intense fear to bubble up any time you are triggered.
But reacting to these triggers can make you appear weak and unstable to those around you, making things worse when they expect you to ”get over it.” Obviously, getting over it would be great, but how are you supposed to do that? The pain, the fear, the anxiety, these things are very real. Many cannot just get over it. No wonder a good number of us shove our fears in the basement of our minds!
We may react to life with great negativity because of repressed fears. There's a lot to be afraid of and a lot of uncertainty. Ones personal narratives can be built around these experiences.
Here's the good news!!! We can change our narratives, our stories of struggle, into stories of great courage. We can positively affect others’ lives with great wisdom if we honor them by developing a voice of sharing and learn from them.
We humans are all connected. We can heal each other with stories of success born out of great pain and suffering. As you reach out to help others, you are instantly important. Open up and talk to each other. Our connection can help us to heal.
May we all honor our emotions long enough to become wise and know that we are useful. Never give up -- you are loved and needed more than you imagine! Sherrie Garrett, LCSW
