This is important for every parent and teacher to understand.

Many people develop a negative relationship with a normal bodily function because of the way an adult responded to them when they were a child. It’s not necessarily because the adult was trying to harm the child, it’s usually because the adult doesn’t know how to respond in a helpful way. The adult is often unconsciously reacting the same way they were reacted to. Over time that reaction becomes imprinted on the child’s nervous system and the cycle continues. Parents and teachers both have the power to make a positive or negative imprint on a child’s nervous system. This is one of many reasons why it’s helpful for parents and teachers collaborate.

Many teachers take the stance “It’s not my job to discipline your children” but whether you like it or not, however you’re responding or reacting to the child is contributing to their ability to Self Regulate or not. Ignoring our role in supporting children’s social and emotional development makes life harder for ourselves, our classroom, and our children. It takes works but it’s important for parents and teachers to practice their own Self Regulation skills to support the children we care for.

Our responses become their inner voice.
Our responses become the foundation of their Self Regulation.
