Happy Samhain🎃
Happy Samhain everyone! 🕯🌙
Today we celebrate a centuries old tradition. Samhain (pronounced sow-win) was an ancient Celtic harvest festival. Marking the start of winter and transition from the warm, plentiful summer, to the dark, cold, and unpredictable winter, this has long been believed to be the time of year when the veil between the living and dead is at its thinnest.
Traditionally, it was believed spirits were able to return to the physical world to visit their living family during Samhain. Offerings of wine or food would be left for the weary souls traveling to earth, and many would wear costumes and ignite bonfires to keep away malicious spirits. Much of the dark symbolism we associate with Halloween today, including bats, demons, and ghosts, originated from these early Samhain celebrations.
Wishing everyone a safe and joyous day!
