John Frank Ostendorf

John Frank Ostendorf, 79, of Holly Hill, South Carolina, passed away peacefully in his sleep on Thursday, January 22, 2026.

Born on April 25, 1946, in Columbus, Ohio, John was the son of the late Clara Hammond Ostendorf and John Ostendorf.John proudly served his country for 27 years in the United States Air Force, retiring with the distinguished rank of Senior Master Sergeant (E-8). His rank was earned through decades of discipline, leadership, sacrifice, and unwavering commitment. The Air Force was more than a career—it was a calling that shaped his character and guided his values. He believed in structure, responsibility, integrity, and taking care of those under his leadership. These principles were not left at the base; he carried them into his home and family life every day.He was preceded in death by his parents; his sisters Rebecca Ostendorf, Becky Ge**er, and Carroll Ann Frye; and his grandson Travis Michael-Lance Fuller.John is survived by his beloved wife of 60 years, Cleva Jane Ostendorf, with whom he shared a devoted and enduring marriage. Throughout his Air Force career and the many seasons of their life together, she remained his steady partner and constant support. Together, they built a life grounded in loyalty, patience, and mutual respect. He was a proud father to Synthia Darlene Ostendorf and John Paul Ostendorf, leading by example rather than words and teaching the importance of hard work, keeping one’s word, and standing strong through life’s challenges. He was a cherished grandfather to Megan Darlene Quick; John Thomas Ostendorf, and his spouse Ashlee Ostendorf; Madison Leigh Ostendorf and her fiancé Justin Taylor; and Connor Wayne Ostendorf and his spouse Andrea Ostendorf. John was also a loving great-grandfather to Nevaeh Denise Fuller; Carter Lee Ostendorf; Elsie Margaret Taylor; Hazel Irene Taylor; and Henry Scott Taylor, expected in March 2026.He is also survived by his siblings Marc Ostendorf and Illene Gundelfinger, along with many extended family members, friends, and fellow service members. John loved his family deeply and expressed that love through steadiness, dependability, and quiet strength.Even after retirement, his sense of duty never faded. He faced life—including its struggles—with resilience and determination, meeting each challenge head-on.

What will be missed most is his presence—the reassurance that came simply from knowing he was there. Though his absence leaves a space that cannot be filled, his legacy lives on through the family he loved, the airmen he led, and the values he passed down. The family will receive friends on Saturday, January 31, 2026, from 2:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. at Avinger Funeral Home, 2274 Eutaw Road. Barry Mouzan Mizell

Barry Mouzan Mizell, 62, passed away peacefully at his home on January 24, 2026, after a courageous battle with cancer.Barry was a farmer through and through—a man who felt most at home behind the wheel of a tractor or watching the sun rise over a freshly worked field. He believed the land was something you respected, cared for, and took pride in, much like family. Long days in the fields, honest labor, and the smell of fresh dirt weren’t just what he did—they were who he was.Known to many as a stubborn mule with a heart of gold, Barry had a laugh you could hear down the road and a way of talking to folks that made everyone feel like a friend. He truly never met a stranger and would help anyone who needed it. Barry loved fishing and was especially proud when he bought his boat. He found peace in quiet places, whether sitting on the water with a line in the lake or standing in a field at daybreak—those were the places he felt closest to God.Barry will be remembered for his joking manner, his stubborn streak, his kindness, and the great pride he took in being a dad.He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Lisa Mizell, and his father, Elliott “Ell” Sweatman.Barry leaves behind his daughters, Megan Mizell (Douglas) and Rebecca Mizell (Daniel); his grandchildren, Dallas Dickson and Maggie, Sophia, and Wesley Tindall; his mother Ellen Singletary Ott: sisters Angie McManus (Tommy) and Wendy Long (Robert); brother, Bill Sweatman; aunt, Eva Clement; nephews, Kyle McManus (Kelly), Blake McManus (Michelle), and Josh Long; along with his great-nephews and great-niece; and his loving girlfriend, Tina Jeffcoat. Those who would serve as Honorary Pallbearers would be Tommy McManus, Bill Sweatman, Kyle McManus, Steve Whetstone, Bobbie Lee Gatson, Mark Jackson and Calvin Strock.

A Memorial Service will be held Sunday, February 1, 2026, 2 PM at Avinger Funeral Home. The family will receive friends after the service.

Gary Lou Ludwigson

Gary Lou Ludwigson, 84, passed away on January 13, 2026. He was born on April 24, 1941, in Wisconsin, the son of the late Norma Ludwigson and Albert Bleskacek.

Gary graduated from Bloomer High School in 1959 and proudly joined the United States Air Force, where he served for over 20 years before retiring in 1980. During his military career, he taught aircrew members the use of survival equipment, attended Jungle Survival School, and served in Vietnam. He also served with the Air Force Honor Guard, ensuring veterans received honorable burials. Gary earned an associate degree through the Air Force, later obtained a bachelor’s degree from Southern Illinois University, and continued working toward a master’s degree.

Following his military retirement, Gary began a second career in public service. He retired in 2000 from The Citadel, where he served as Deputy Director of Public Safety. He also worked as the Coordinator of Admissions for a psychiatric hospital and volunteered as a crisis intervention counselor. In addition, he served as a crew leader for the Berkeley County 1980 Census and participated in the SASE Foreign Exchange Program, hosting international students.

Gary was deeply committed to community service. He coached and refereed Little League sports, volunteered as a coach for the Holly Hill High School golf team, and donated his boat for fishing outings for the blind. He served on the Property Owners Association at Santee Cooper Resort and on the Santee Literacy Council. For more than nine years, he hosted an annual bocce ball tournament at his home, an event cherished by friends and family.

A lifelong athlete, Gary excelled in basketball and football, averaging 22 points per game in basketball and serving as quarterback of his high school football team. He continued playing sports in the Air Force, competing in basketball tournaments while traveling to Mexico and Japan. He also played against teams such as the Philippine Olympic Team, the Washington Huskies during their tour, and the Harlem Globetrotters. An avid golfer, Gary achieved his most treasured accomplishment—a hole-in-one—and placed second out of 184 golfers in the Retired Military Golf Classic.

Earlier in life, Gary hitchhiked across the United States, meeting many interesting people along the way. He was the owner of Ruth’s Hallmark in Summerville and remained active in veterans’ organizations throughout his life. He was a lifetime member of the Ladson VFW, a charter member and first Tiler of Elks Lodge #2719, and a member of the American Legion in Manning.

Gary loved the outdoors. He hunted in Wisconsin, fished wherever he could, and was an avid gardener with more than 40 species of flowers and bushes. An amateur ornithologist, his yard was designated an established bird sanctuary by the Audubon Society. He fed and housed more than 30 species of birds, and a corner of the Santee Golf Resort is dedicated to bluebirds.

Gary was preceded in death by his parents and his first wife, Mary Frances Ludwigson.

He is survived by his wife, Debbie Myers Ludwigson; his brother, Larry Haigh (Deb) of Washington State; stepdaughters, Carmon Goudy and Brittany Steele of St. George; grandchildren, Joseph Burgess and Lillie Goudy, and Dale Fessler, who was like a son to him; brother-in-law, Kenny Myers (Lori); and sister-in-law, Melissa Behie (Jimmy).
