When The Flag Folds

Every year on Veterans Day we gather to honor bravery, to acknowledge sacrifice, and, for some of us, to feel the sharp ache of remembrance that only loss can bring.

For those who’ve lost a veteran, whether a parent, spouse, sibling, child, or friend, the American flag becomes more than fabric and color. When that flag is presented at a funeral, folded with precision and care, it signifies a nation’s gratitude, a deep and enduring honor for a life lived in service.

Yet every time we see it, carefully displayed in the corner of a living room or cradled in a shadow box, we’re reminded not only of their service, but of their absence.

The flag whispers stories only we remember. The laughter at family barbecues, the stories that rolled out in the quiet after dinner, the warm steady presence in the house.

Here’s the thing…it stands as a tribute, yes, but also as proof of what we’ve lost.

While others salute those flags in parades, we might find our eyes stinging, caught off guard by the memory of that last embrace, the sound of Taps echoing through an empty space.

I know first hand what it feels like to be handed something so beautiful, so meaningful, in the worst of moments. To know, as the military chaplain presses that folded triangle into your hands, that you now carry a piece of a nation’s gratitude and your own unending grief.

I’ll never forget the pain of that moment, the coldness of the morning air, the weight of the folded flag in my hands, and the haunting notes of Taps playing softly in the background.

It was the most profound mix of honor and heartache I’ve ever known.

Sometimes, it feels like the world expects us to feel only pride.

And yes…we’re proud.

But we’re also hurting, missing, and longing for more time.

The flag is a gift…but it’s also a daily reminder. A silent witness to our heartbreak and our love.

If this Veterans Day you’re running your hands along the edges of that folded flag, I understand how honoring can also mean hurting.

And how gratitude…can be laced with grief.

To all the veteran's living and no longer with us...thank you for your service.

Good morning sweet friends! I am so excited to share with you that both Duck River Cemetery and Holly Pond Cemetery will be joining with cemeteries across the nation this holiday season to participate in Wreaths Across America. Both cemeteries will honor our nation’s military members who have passed on with an evergreen holiday wreath as a symbol of remembrance and gratitude for their sacrifice and service. But they need our help in being able to honor those men and women. Each wreath cost $17.00 - and no service member will go without a wreath. They also need family members, and members of the community, to help honor those we love and appreciate. On December 13th, as wreaths are placed in cemeteries across the nation, Holly Pond Cemetery will host a service set to begin at 10:00 a.m. and the service at Duck River Cemetery will begin at 12 noon. As part of the service, the wreaths will be placed throughout the cemetery where they will remain throughout the holiday season. They are inviting us as both family members and the community to participate in this beautiful tribute. So how do we help? Donations - from individuals, businesses, and churches are welcomed. Family members - they would love to have you honor your loved one by placing their wreath. Community members - there will be service members with no family in attendance. Will you stand in for their family and lay a wreath on their grave for them? While I know more about the Holly Pond service and what they need, I’m sure the Duck River folks could use our help too. Reach out to either cemetery to see how you can help. And y’all - thank those people who are working so hard to make this happen. This is all a labor of love. None of these sweet people are paid to help with the upkeep of these cemeteries. When we call - they go. Rain, snow, or heatwave - they go, and they do it to make sure your loved one is respected and honored. So, thank you - sincerely thank you - to the cemetery officials and volunteers throughout our area - for all you do. Now… let’s all see if we can help make Wreaths Across America an overwhelming success in our area.
Love you all much ~ Amber
