to one of the strangest chapters in massage history: the "Rest Cure" of the late 1800s.

Wealthy society ladies diagnosed with neurasthenia (basically melancholy and fatigue) were prescribed 6-8 weeks of forced bed rest where they couldn't read, write, sew, or even feed themselves. They needed permission just to sit up in bed. (some of this I can get behind)

The treatment included full body massage, electrotherapy, and a fatty diet rich in milk and meat. This is actually where the full-body table massage we know today got its start. Before the 1880s, that kind of massage didn't really exist. Pretty wild, right? ๐Ÿค”

Wondering why you're tired, irritable, starving, have zero interest in leaving the house?

The answer might not be Monday this time. Seasonal affective disorder (SAD) is very real and there are times it can kick your butt. Symptoms include:

- Mood: Hopeless, irritable
- Feeling lethargic or sluggish
- Sleeping more and/or drowsy during the day
- Could mash a full pizza (craving carbs)
- Difficulty focusing

(*note: all of this kind of sounds like Thanksgiving Day ๐Ÿค”)

If this sounds like you just know you're not alone...and it will pass. When possible, take some time to just disconnect, get in the sun, do some low impact exercise like walking, whatever you need to keep dominating life. Just keep finding time for you!

And the answer is, it truly depends on the individual.

โœ…If you have chronic pain or a sports injury then you probably want to try and get a massage 2-3 times a week...just be sure to clear everything with your doctor first.

โœ…If you have general aches and pains, or you have difficulty relaxing, sleeping, focusing at work...then maybe twice a month.

โœ…If you just appreciate a regular tune up to keep things running smoothly, then maybe once a month.

โœ…Or, whenever you can actually make it work!

This truly is about what makes the most sense for you. As always, be sure to communicate openly with your massage therapist so she can help develop a healing plan that works for your healthcare needs and with your budget.
