Lucky learning in action 🍀💚

Today we made green slime for St. Patrick’s Day while working on following directions through a fun, hands-on recipe activity! From gathering materials to mixing each ingredient in order, this session targeted sequencing, listening skills, and the ability to follow multi-step directions.

This sensory-rich activity also supported attention, engagement, and independence—making learning both meaningful and exciting!

Given just 4 materials: popsicle sticks, cup, playdough, and pipe cleaners our goal was to design a bridge strong enough to hold the most coins!

This activity targeted problem solving, flexible thinking, and idea generation as we explored different ways to build, tested our designs, and made changes along the way. We talked through what worked, what didn’t, and how to improve the structure each time.

Hands-on learning, creativity, and critical thinking all in one 🙌

Near point copying ✏️ is more than just writing!
This activity supports:
• 👀 Visual scanning – locating letters, numbers, or symbols in a field
• 🎯 Visual attention – maintaining focus on the target
• ✋ Visual–motor integration – coordinating what the eyes see with hand movements
• 🧠 Working memory – holding information long enough to reproduce it
These foundational skills are important for handwriting, copying from the board, reading, and classroom participation.

🌈 **One worksheet, two different goals!**

Here are two activities using the same rainbow worksheet combined with **heavy work** (providing input to the joints to support regulation, attention, and strength). The activity was modified to target different skill areas depending on the child’s needs.

✨ **Activity 1:**
Working on **number and color recognition** while practicing **coloring skills**.

✨ **Activity 2:**
Targeting **memory**, **visual attention to locate letters**, **in-hand manipulation**, and **letter formation**.

⬆️ **other ways we used the worksheet to support goals **
• Identify and write a **word that begins with the letter**
• **Place stickers** when the letter is found
• **Write the letter on top of a small sticker** to support **letter sizing and spatial awareness**

Same worksheet, different goals, and multiple ways to **grade the activity** to meet each child where they are. 🌈✏️ OT is pretty magical 💫

Oh dreidel, dreidel, dreidel…

We struggled with spinning the dreidel at first but with a little practice pushing coins from palm with thumb to wake up the thumb muscle we were able to get that perfect spin!

Here’s a simple activity to prep with big rewards for our tiny hands. We used play dough, a small branch (can also use a pencil) and some pipe cleaners to “grow” our own little tree. But don’t let the simple materials fool you—there is so much hard work happening here:

Bilateral Coordination: Using two hands together to steady the branch while decorating.

Pincer Grasp: Picking up tiny beads to slide onto the pipe cleaner “branches.”

Cognitive Skills: Following specific color patterns for the ornaments, color, and object recognition

Attention: so much focus is needed to manipulate small objects

Sensory Play: Topping it all off with a dusting of “snow”! ❄️

Sometimes the best engagement comes from the simplest tools.
