I would add that your environment is equally important. Don’t underestimate the simple act of making your bed in the morning. A clean, organized home, automobile and workspace at your job have underrated impacts on your mental health and wellbeing. It goes beyond that too. Your environment includes who you surround yourself with and the media you expose yourself to. Often times we are being influenced and impacted in ways we don’t even recognize.

One lesson I've learned from athletes:

They don't handle hard things better because sport "built character." That's a poster in a high school gym.

They handle hard things better because their body has a memory of being uncomfortable and not stopping.

Shaking legs. Burning lungs. Every reason to quit. And they kept going.

That's not discipline. That's stored evidence.

And here's the thing. You don't need sports to build that library.

Every hard conversation you didn't walk away from. Every month you weren't sure you'd make it. Every time you wanted to quit something and chose not to.

That's the same data.

Most people have more of it than they think. They just never learned to use it.

Because when the next hard thing shows up, you don't need a pep talk. You need a reference point.

And if you've ever been uncomfortable and kept going anyway, you already have one.

Stop looking for motivation. Start remembering what you've already done.

I write a weekly newsletter where I unpack these ideas.

Most men don’t fail because they aim too high.

They fail because they never aim at all.

Playing safe feels intelligent, but it quietly guarantees a forgettable life.

Ambition comes with risk, but stagnation comes with certainty.

You can fall from reaching too far, but at least you moved, at least you tested your limits, at least you lived.

The greater loss is staying grounded your entire life, convincing yourself it was wisdom when it was really fear.

History remembers those who dared, even when they failed.

It forgets those who protected themselves into irrelevance.

So make mistakes in pursuit of something bigger.

Because obscurity is the only outcome you cannot recover from.

"When you don't know where to start, go back to the beginning." -Alphonse Soady

Foundation & Fundamentals

When we view some of the most awe inspiring structures in the world or admire the accomplishments of our favorite athletes, usually what we're viewing are results. Results are typically the first things we notice, good or bad. We don't often stop to consider how this or that person, place or thing came to be the way it currently is.

When we think about Tom Brady we think about Super Bowl rings. We call him the GOAT. We admire him or we hate him for the same reasons. Rarely, do we stop to really think about how or why he was able to amass such a phenomenal career, to understand the obsessive drive for accomplishment he possessed compared to his peers. Certainly, there were more athletically gifted players in the NFL, smarter players, so what separated Tom? How do skyscrapers scrape the sky? A firm foundation, and strong, consistent fundamentals, that's how. The everyday, simple, boring, monotonous, done over and over again tasks or habits are what greatness stands upon. Those actions that few see or appreciate. The unheralded moments that even you might not recognize as important. The thin, blurry line between method and madness is where magic is made.

Weight loss plateaued? Relationships struggling? Back account balance low? Don't know what to do about it? Go back to the beginning. It's likely your answers will be found there.
