VICKIE L. BARR

Vickie L. Barr, 82, formerly of Hoyt, passed away on April 16, 2026, at the Lexington Park Health and Rehabilitation Center in Topeka.

She was born August 1, 1943 at Hays, the daughter of Warren and Marge Walters Moore. She graduated from Bethel College with a Bachelor’s Degree in social work, and received her Master’s Degree in social work from the University of Kansas.

Vickie worked at various jobs, including Mammels Store and Dillons Grocery. Her career was as a clinical social worker, working with hospices and geriatric psychiatric units.

She was a member of St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Mayetta, and the Altar Society at the church. She was also a member of the V.F.W. Auxiliary at Hays, the National Association of Social Workers and the Kansas Association of Medical Social Workers, where she served as Treasurer. She was a Girl Scout and a Girl Scout Leader for 4 Winds Girl Scout Council.

She married Larry Barr on July 24, 1961 at LaCrosse. He preceded her in death on July 3, 1984.
Vickie was also preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Mary Beth Higgins.

Survivors include three daughters, Mary Barr, Atlanta, GA, Bev Johnson (Daniel), Topeka and Stacie Garcia (Daniel), Newton, one brother, Dick Moore, Great Bend, two sisters, Terri Gray, Colorado Springs, CO and Shari Johnson, Topeka, six grandchildren, Chris Garcia (Allie), Erica Garcia, Luke Johnson (Chantal), Eli Johnson, Hannah Ayala (Bryan) and Lydia Lange (Rory), and three great grandchildren, Devin Burke, David Ayala and Rita Lange.

A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, April 22nd at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Mayetta. Inurnment and committal service will be 3:30 p.m. that day at St. Michael Cemetery in LaCrosse, KS. Karen Elizabeth Kopitzke, 77, passed away on Saturday, April 4, 2026, at the Onaga Health and Rehabilitation Center in Onaga, KS.

She was born April 2, 1949, in Orange, California, the daughter of Clifford and Bernice Shedd Kopitzke. She graduated from Newport Harbor High School in Newport Beach, CA in 1967 and attended Orange Coast College in Costa Mesa, CA.

Karen met the challenges she faced in life with a resilient spirit. Along the way, she lived in California, Michigan, Washington state, and Kansas. She enjoyed living in Manhattan, KS, for many years but aways remained a Californian at heart.

She was a voracious reader and loved to travel far and wide through the books she read. Her reading and attention to current events resulted in a large vocabulary she didn’t hesitate to use.

Karen enjoyed singing and reading aloud, loved the ocean, and relished a hot cup of tea and a good piece of cheese. She was an ace at nurturing finicky house plants and was partial to cats, including the K-State Wildcat athletic teams.

Survivors include a son, Richard Payne, in Kansas; a daughter, Caryn Husk, in California; a sister, Christine Kopitzke, in California; and a granddaughter, Linnaea.

Joyce F. Bonjour, 97, formerly of Lexington, Missouri, passed away on Tuesday, March 31, 2026 at the Onaga Health and Rehabilitation Center.

She was born July 26, 1928 in Kansas City, Missouri, the daughter of Randall and Gertrude Doyle McDonnell. She graduated from Lillis High School in Kansas City, MO and from Mesa College in Grand Junction Colorado. She was a medical transcriptionist at several different hospitals.

Joyce was a member of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority and was a champion bowler, belonging to several bowling associations. She was also an accomplished bridge player and had been a Den Mother with the Cub Scouts.

She lived in Onaga from 1975 to 2018 and was married to Lawrence Bonjour.

Survivors include three sons, Patrick Berry, Lexington, MO, Edward Berry, Onaga and Jeffery Berry, Kansas City, MO, two grandchildren, Derek and Shawna, and five great grandchildren, Owen, Jax, Paige, Katelyn and Adelyn.

Marjorie Jo Bostwick, 76, of Hoyt, passed away peacefully on March 28, 2026, in Topeka.
She was born the daughter of Gerald and Wilma (Maris) Gooderl on December 16, 1949, in Holton, Kansas. Marjorie graduated from Hoyt High School in 1967.
She married John Bostwick on October 24, 1971. They were married 42 years prior to John’s passing in 2014.
Marjorie started her working career at Foster’s Fabric in Topeka. She enjoyed working with brides the most in planning their special day. Marjorie was a wonderful seamstress and shared her talents with many friends and family. When her and John moved to Emporia, Kansas, she worked in the business office at Blue Stem Farm Store. She enjoyed her time there because it reminded her of her childhood growing up on the family farm. Her and John returned to Topeka where she began her employment at Washburn University where she had a 32 year career in the business office. Marjorie loved being a part of the Washburn University family and cheering on the Ichabod’s.
Marjorie was a devoted Aunt and Godmother. She loved to attend all the sporting activities of her nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews, and her godchildren. She also had a special love for KU basketball, but most of her family was proudest when she wore Royal Valley Purple.
She is survived by Sister, Gerri Stithem, Brother, Roger (Mary) Gooderl, Special Cousin, Donna (Kevin) Montague, Nieces, Myra Stithem, Kim (Thad) Gerety, Penny (Paul) Barger, Amy (Jason) Klotz, Sheryl (Andy) Barnett and Linda (Danny) Anno, Nephews, Jerry Stithem, Scott (Deb) Gooderl and Jeff (Brenda) Stithem, and Godchildren, Madison Henley and Kaden Henley. She also has 15 great nieces and nephews and 18 great-great nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and nephew Jimmy Stithem.
Memorial services will be 11:00 a.m. Monday, April 6th at Chapel Oaks Funeral Home in Hoyt. A visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. until service time. TERRY LEE SHOCKEY, SR.

Terry Lee Shockey, Sr., 75, of Holton, passed away on March 23, 2026 with family at his side.

He was born on December 25, 1950 in Onaga, KS the son of Fred and Lorena Rawlings Shockey. He graduated from Seneca High School in 1968 and was a U.S. Army veteran, having served in Viet Nam as a code breaker. While serving in the military stateside, he had a side job with a moving company and had helped move several Presidents including Nixon, Ford and Carter, in and out of the White House. After he left the military he worked for the National Security Agency.

Terry was a database administrator for the State of Nebraska and later as a contract DBA for the State of Arkansas. He also worked for the Arkansas Teachers Retirement System in Little Rock, AR. Prior to his retirement he drove a school bus for Pulaski County School District in Little Rock, Arkansas.

He was a member of Heart of Jackson Humane Society and the Database Administration Forum, also known as IDUG.

He married Marilyn McGinness Rios in 1969. They were later divorced. He then married Sharlene “Shar” Patten on December 7, 1996 in Olathe, KS. She survives, of the home.

Terry never met a stranger! He was considered the fun loving, outgoing, crazy uncle and friend to all that knew him. He had a passion for life and always believed the best in everyone. His favorite thing to do was to go the casino and play bingo with his family! He loved animals of all kinds especially his beloved Lucy and Luey.

Terry was preceded in death by his parents, Fred and Lorena Shockey, a son, Terry Lee “T.J.” Shockey, Jr., a great grandson, Orion McGreevy, three sisters, Maxine Clemmer, Louise Kaster and Darlene McAuliffe, and a brother, Fred Shockey, Jr.

Other survivors include a daughter, Marilyn Vialpando (Thomas), Hoyt, three brothers, Bill Shockey, Topeka, Garry Shockey, Shawnee and Lyle Shockey, Seneca, one sister, Freda Galer, Holton, four grandchildren, Elizabeth O’Grady (Brandon) of Montrose, CO, Zachariah Vialpando, Hoyt, Hannah McGreevy (Luke) Topeka and Seth Shockey, North Little Rock, AR, five great grandchildren, Annelise, Ryker, Easton, Declan and Sylas, many nieces and nephews, and his three dogs, Nora, Sadie and Molly.

A Celebration of Life is being planned for Saturday, April 4th at the VFW Memorial Post 1367, 926 W 6th St, Holton, KS, from 1:00 to 4:00 pm. This will be a come and go event to share your memories of Terry and to laugh!

Betty Jean Mahkuk Rice, 86, passed away on Tuesday, March 10, 2026 at the Rossville Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center.

She was born April 4, 1939 at Mayetta, the daughter of Pete Matchie and Lucille Mahkuk.

Betty was a member of the Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation and the Native American Church.

She married Orville Rice in 1957. They were divorced and he preceded her in death.

Betty had first worked as a Licensed Practical Nurse. After she earned her Bachelor’s Degree in Social Work from Washburn University, she worked in social services for Four Tribes of Kansas, then Prairie Band Potawatomi Social Services.

She was also preceded in death by two sons, Kevin Rice and Brad Rice, a daughter, Sylvia Johnson, an adopted daughter, Marilyn LaCour, four brothers, Denny Delge, Michael Delge, Pat Mahkuk and Walter Delge, Jr., and three sisters, Ilona Delge, Myra Matchie and Edwina Dickinson.

Survivors include a son, Chris Rice (Kristina), Nedrow, NY, two adopted sons, Wayne Jesseppe and Shon Jesseppe (Carol), all of Horton, a daughter, Shirley Mitchell (Tom), Oskaloosa, two brothers, Roland Matchie, Holton and Fred Mahkuk, Wisconsin, six sisters, Margaret Mahkuc, Mayetta, Eileen Delge and Marilyn Delge, both of Lawrence, Ione Childers, Perry, and Tutti Kerns and Hedy Noland, both of Holton, ten grandchildren, fifteen great grandchildren, two great-great grandchildren, and a host of many other grandchildren that she had a special relationship with.

Supper and wake services will be Sunday evening, March 15th at the Nozhackum Hall. Burial will be Monday afternoon in Mahkuk Cemetery. LEON E. CRAMER

Leon E. Cramer, 85, of Holton, passed away on Wednesday, February 18, 2026, at Overland Park Regional Hospital.

He was born on July 13, 1940, in Holton, the son of Paul and Bertha (Wolfe) Cramer. He graduated from Netawaka High School in 1958.

In his early years, Leon worked for the Kansas Department of Transportation. He later worked for Santa Fe Railroad as a freight carman (welder). He left Santa Fe to open Cramer Retail Liquor, which he owned and operated in Holton. Later, he returned to Santa Fe, where he worked until his retirement.

Leon was a member of First Christian Church in Holton and served as a former deacon. He was also a member of Eagles Aerie No. 3417 in Holton until it disbanded.

He married Betty Faye Slimmer on July 19, 1963, at First Christian Church in Holton. She survives of the home.

Leon was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Aleene Cramer.

Other survivors include a son, Brian Cramer of Shawnee, KS; two daughters, LeAnn Drumm (Steven) of Shawnee, KS, and Carol McManigal (Chris) of Holton; four grandchildren, Kendall Martin (Levi), Tricia Drumm, Carly Raney, and Abigail Drumm; and two great-grandchildren, Tucker and Marley Martin.

Per Leon’s request, no public services are planned. His family is going to have a private celebration of life. NATALIE RAE SABLE

Natalie Rae Sable, 87, of Holton, passed away on Monday, February 16, 2026 at The Pines South near Holton.

She was born March 13, 1938 in Wolfeboro, New Hampshire, the daughter of Nathaniel and Janice Fitch Warburton.

In her early years, Natalie worked for the Red Cross, part of the time in Korea. Later she was a teacher, and spent many years as the Librarian at Holton Middle School.

She was a member of Holton Evangel Church.

Natalie married Mark Joseph Sable on July 4, 1977 in Raymond, New Hampshire. He preceded her in death on January 6, 2012.

She was also preceded in death by her parents, a step-son, David Jospeh Sable, one brother, David Warburton, and two sisters, Mary Ward and Ellen Levesque.

Survivors include a daughter, Laura Lea Stauffer (Adam), Topeka, a step-daughter, Janet Darlene Rhea (Greg), Malvern, AR, a step-son, Paul Michael Sable (Patti), Lincoln, CA, three grandchildren, David Wilmoth, Dante Nitzschke and Natalia Mae Stauffer, and one great-granddaughter, Nadia.

Memorial Services for Natalie will be 11:00 a.m. Saturday, February 21st at the Holton Evangel Church. Joel M. “Shop” Charles, “Shopteese”, 69, of Mayetta, passed away on Saturday, February 7, 2026 at his home on the Reservation.

He was born August 22, 1956 in Pawnee, Oklahoma, the son of William Charles and Thelma Hale, and was raised by his grandmother, Erma Pequano. He attended Chilocco Indian School in Newkirk, Oklahoma and was a U.S. Army Veteran.

Joel was a member of the Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation. He had worked for the Kickapoo Tribal Police Department, for Labor Max, and was a dishwasher at the Prairie Band Casino.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Martin Jim, Jr.

Survivors include a daughter, Wynona Jean (Davis) Nemechek, Topeka, his siblings, Aaron Hale, Mayetta, Darrell Wewenes, Darlene Wewenes and Wynona Wewenes, all of Horton, Sharon Doxtator, Topeka, Madelene Wewenes, Lawrence, Milford Wewenes, Horton and Eddie Joe Mitchell, Mayetta, four grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

A supper and wake will be held Friday evening, February 13th at the Dance Ground Building. Burial with military honors by We-Ta-Se American Legion Post No. 410 will be Saturday afternoon in Metwe-Shabni Cemetery. Chapel Oaks Funeral Home in Holton is in charge of arrangements.
