Here to assist individuals to live independently in the homes and communities of their choice.

Independent Living is a philosophy and a way of life. It is a movement of people with disabilities who work for self-determination, equal opportunities and self-respect. The Independent Living philosophy says that every person, regardless of disability, has the potential and the right to exercise individual self-determination. We expect the same choices and control in our everyday lives that everyone else takes for granted. We want the same freedom to try, and fail, and learn from our failures. We want to grow up in our families, go to the neighborhood school, use the same bus as our neighbors, work in jobs that are in line with our education and abilities, start families of our own. We need to be in charge of our lives, to think and speak for ourselves. We need to support and learn from each other. We must organize ourselves and work for political changes that lead to the legal protection of our human and civil rights. We are profoundly ordinary people sharing the same need to feel included, recognized and loved.

TRAILS Central in Soldotna has their first event! TRAILS Central is hosting the first Game Night and Planning Meeting to plan the coming season of inclusive recreation for the Central Peninsula and stay to play games and enjoy food! This is a great way to learn more about TRAILS and the Independent Living Center.

The Joint Advocacy effort of the Alaska Mental Health Trust Authority and partner advisory boards (Governor's Council on Disabilities & Special Education, Alaska Commission on Aging, Advisory Board on Alcoholism & Drug Abuse, and Alaska Mental Health Board) announces this invitation to attend the 'Super Advocate' Advocacy Training on Friday, November 14 (10am-3pm, with working lunch), delivered by Zoom. See attached flyer for more information. Registration is required.

This free training offers tools and hands-on practice for advocating for policy and funding that impact Trust beneficiaries (people with mental illness, substance use disorders, intellectual/developmental disabilities, Alzheimer’s disease/dementia, traumatic brain injuries), families, caregivers, providers of services, administrators, and others interested in advocating for Trust beneficiaries.

What you’ll learn: Tips for Telling Your Story to Policymakers and Making Your ‘Ask’ · Tips for Meetings with Policymakers · Tips for Speaking at Public Testimony · How to Follow the Legislature · Advocacy From Home.

Participants should be prepared to participate with cameras on. Sharing your story can be your own personal experience, the experience of a friend or family member (with their permission to share), your experience as a professional working in the field, or a composite of people/clients in your experience.
