Independent Living Center Aging, Disability & Independent Living Resource Center;
Here to assist individuals to live independently in the homes and communities of their choice.

Independent Living is a philosophy and a way of life. It is a movement of people with disabilities who work for self-determination, equal opportunities and self-respect. The Independent Living philosophy says that every person, regardless of disability, has the potential and the right to exercise individual self-determination. We expect the same choices and control in our everyday lives that everyone else takes for granted. We want the same freedom to try, and fail, and learn from our failures. We want to grow up in our families, go to the neighborhood school, use the same bus as our neighbors, work in jobs that are in line with our education and abilities, start families of our own. We need to be in charge of our lives, to think and speak for ourselves. We need to support and learn from each other. We must organize ourselves and work for political changes that lead to the legal protection of our human and civil rights. We are profoundly ordinary people sharing the same need to feel included, recognized and loved.

Happy Ed Roberts Day!

Today is , commemorating the “Father of Independent Living” on his birthday.

Ed was a close friend and collaborator of Judy’s. On this day in 2023, Judy wrote:

“Ed is known by many as the ‘Father of the Independent Living Movement’ and I’m often called the ‘Mother of the Independent Living Movement.’ Together, we were instrumental in advancing Centers for Independent Living across the United States. We were able to influence and develop policy at federal, state, and local levels with a mission to achieve the full inclusion of people with disabilities throughout all facets of our society.“

TRAILS Central is hosting the first Game Night and Planning Meeting to plan the coming season of inclusive recreation for the Central Peninsula and stay to play games and enjoy food! This is a great way to learn more about TRAILS and the Independent Living Center.
