Honaker Outlasts Rural Retreat in Shootout to Close Regular Season, 38–32
Matt Mullins - Mountain Mojo Sports Talk
The Honaker Tigers finished their regular season in thrilling fashion Friday night, outlasting Rural Retreat on the road 38–32. The victory marks Honaker’s fourth straight and sixth win in their last seven games, locking them into the Region 1D playoffs as the #4 seed with a 6–4 record.
Rural Retreat, despite falling to 4–6 and dropping three of their last four, once again showed flashes of their potential. When healthy, the Indians have proven to be a dangerous squad, giving even undefeated Eastside a scare earlier this year and could be a sleeper team in the postseason.
After a 6–6 deadlock through one quarter, Honaker exploded in the second behind quarterback Parker Lowe, who fired three touchdown passes in the period—two of those to Ty Hubbard. By halftime, the Tigers led 26–12, and momentum was firmly in their corner. Hubbard finished the night with 12 receptions for 135 yards and two touchdowns, while Levi Honaker added 9 catches for 88 yards and a touchdown while Jeremiah Rose tallied 7 grabs for 80 yards.
Rural Retreat clawed back in the third quarter behind quarterback Brody Allen, who connected twice with Jay Snavely for touchdowns to bring the Indians within striking distance. Allen finished with 203 yards passing and 4 touchdowns, while adding 40 yards rushing. Snavely’s big night included 3 catches for 90 yards and two scores, while Hunter Rollyson contributed in every phase—86 receiving yards, 2 receiving touchdowns, 48 rushing yards, and a rushing touchdown.
Honaker’s ground game proved the difference late, as Malachi Gilbert powered through with two crucial rushing touchdowns—one in the third quarter and another in the fourth—to hold off the Indians’ comeback bid. Gilbert finished with 58 rushing yards, while Noah Schoonover added 54 more on the ground.
Lowe’s arm was the story of the night, though—the freshman sensation signal-caller set a school record with 32 completions, finishing with 323 passing yards and four touchdowns, including a strike to Kam Beavers during the Tigers’ second-quarter surge.
Rollyson’s late touchdown run cut the lead to 38–32 with four minutes left, but Honaker’s offense bled the clock and sealed the deal on an impressive road win to close the regular season.
Next up the #4 Tigers host #5 Northwood at Fuller Field in the Region 1D playoffs, while Rural Retreat travels to face top-seeded Eastside in Carl McConnell Stadium—a rematch from one of the most physical and exciting games of the season.
