Navian Hawaii

Navian Hawaii Navigator + Guardian = Navian 💙
We are there when it matters most, guiding families every step of the way with compassion and care.

Our mission is to bring hope, reduce fears and impact lives.

Hospice care is about living your end-of-life journey with dignity and comfort, and above all, it’s about choosing how you want to live for as long as possible. At Navian Hawaii, we are an ʻohana of trained and committed caregivers dedicated to helping patients and their families face this transition with

hope and without fear, surrounded by unconditional love. The care we provide allows individuals to remain at home or in their chosen setting and to live life to the fullest with their loved ones. We care for the whole family by providing relief from physical, emotional, mental and spiritual suffering.

At Navian Hawaii, our team’s compassion extends far beyond the walls of our organization. 🤍

Kirsten, one of our team secretaries and medical assistants, also volunteers her time with Now I Lay Me Down to Sleep, serving as the Hawaiʻi chapter’s area coordinator and team director.

After experiencing her own prenatal loss at 24 weeks, Kirsten turned her grief into purpose — helping provide free remembrance photography for families experiencing prenatal or NICU loss across our island, whether in hospitals or at home.

She advocates for something many don’t talk about: that photographs can be a powerful part of the healing journey.

Because every life matters. Every story matters. Every child deserves to be remembered. 🌈

Great care begins with great leadership.

We’re grateful to our Board of Directors who volunteer their time, expertise and leadership to guide Navian Hawaii’s mission. Mahalo to both past and current members for serving with aloha.

“Navian Hawaii is a local organization led by a local board that knows the community.”

Kevin Sakamoto served on our board for almost a decade, two years as chair. He shares why leadership, commitment and having local ties are essential to ensuring our families receive the right care at the right time.

Mahalo to our board members, past and present, for believing in our mission. It’s because of leaders like Kevin that this work can carry on.

At 99 ½ years old, Rosalie knows the value of staying sharp, independent, and most importantly, getting help when she needs it.

From keeping her mind active with a good game of Rummikub to navigating the challenges of daily meals, Rosalie continues to live life on her terms with the support of Navian Hawaii by her side.

“I don’t feel like I’m alone… I know I will be taken care of.”

That peace of mind is what palliative care is all about: comfort, connection and support for whatever comes next.

Mahalo to our student volunteers from Hawaii Baptist Academy for handcrafting these All About Me Boards!

These boards help honor each patient’s story beyond their medical needs, such as likes and dislikes, fun facts, special memories and more.

For patients who are nonverbal, have dementia or other communication challenges, these boards become a way to connect and offer conversation starters during staff visits.

A simple haircut can mean so much more. ✂️

Tina has been a cosmetologist for more than 35 years, and since August, she’s been volunteering with Navian Hawaii. Offering haircuts to patients is her way of giving back after her own husband received care through our service.

For many patients like GK, she’s the auntie who comes to visit, makes them look good and helps them feel confident. The best moment? Showing them the mirror and seeing their faces light up with a smile.

If you want to make more moments like this possible, consider becoming a volunteer. From office work to music and art therapy, we are looking to fill many spots that support our mission. Learn more at the link in our bio.

Some visitors don’t just walk into a room… they change the whole mood. 🐾💛

Meet Ruby, a therapy dog who’s been spreading comfort since she was a puppy. From libraries and schools to nursing homes and hospice visits, Ruby has a special way of helping people feel seen, remembered and connected.

Even in the hardest moments… a gentle presence can become the best part of the day. Interested in volunteering with Navian Hawaii? Learn more at the link in our bio.

Hannah’s journey to become a child life specialist is deeply personal. When her twin brother was battling cancer, she experienced firsthand the fear and isolation many families face — and the profound impact a child life specialist can have.

“The sibling support offered by these specialists is tremendously important, as it not only helped me stay connected with my hospitalized sibling, but also provided a sense of normalcy during an incredibly challenging time.”

We are grateful to have Hannah on our team who makes sure every keiki she visits feels seen, safe and understood.

Navian Hawaii recently had the honor of holding a special veteran pinning ceremony for one of our patients who proudly served in the U.S. Navy. 🇺🇸⚓️

These ceremonies are one of the meaningful services we provide, recognizing our veteran patients and the families who served alongside them.

We also want to shine a light on our incredible veteran volunteers who help lead these ceremonies and ensure every veteran feels seen, appreciated and celebrated.

Our Story

As Hospice Hawaii, we provided Hospice Care at journey’s end. Now as Navian Hawaii, we’re expanding our services so we can provide care earlier in a patient’s journey. Our new Integrated Care delivers specialized care to those with serious illnesses, before Hospice Care is needed.

As we expand our purpose to provide care for every life journey, our Hospice Hawaii name has also evolved to Navian Hawaii (/ˈnav ēən/). Formed from the words “Navigator” and “Guardian,” Navian is a modern take on the critical roles each staff member performs. As navigators, the Navian ohana provides clarity and guidance through times of uncertainty. As guardians, they provide healing and compassion.

United as Navian Hawaii, a new journey is beginning—a journey to improve the lives of Hawaii’s people, to celebrate every one of life’s moments, and to navigate always in the direction of hope.
