🌱 Learning, Language, and Community 🌱

On Saturday, April 4th, CSC's Gisella Tomita and Jennifer Clark flew to Maui to host a beautiful day with families of deaf, hard of hearing, and deaf-blind children at Homestead Bakery at Maui Bees and Kihei Elementary!

Families explored the garden through hands-on experiential learning. Children picked flowers, touched plants, and met animals while building language in real time. 🌼🐓

We also enjoyed interactive storytime with Gisella, where children helped create name-signs for characters and stayed fully engaged in the story.
Parents learned simple ways to support language at home, including:
• how to read with your child using sign
• how to gain and keep attention
• how to make reading fun and interactive

In the afternoon, families joined a workshop on language acquisition and brain development, and gained a better understanding of how hearing loss impacts development.

Most importantly, families connected. They shared experiences, asked questions, and supported each other. 💛

Special mahalo to Kathryn Adamski for being our tour guide and showing us around the farm.

Our Art in the Park – Oʻahu gathering was truly a beautiful reminder of what happens when families come together in a space filled with creativity, connection, and joy.

Families enjoyed a hands-on art station where keiki explored their creativity using a variety of materials—colorful pipe cleaners, paints, and craft tools. It was wonderful to see teamwork and imagination come to life as participants carefully created their own unique projects.

One of the sweetest moments was seeing our keiki proudly holding up their finished pieces—handmade pinwheels and art creations—smiling with such pride and confidence. These are the moments that stay with us.

We also had the blessing of gathering as a community, capturing a special group photo that reflects the heart of this event—families supporting one another, children of all abilities included, and a shared sense of belonging. From laughter to quiet moments of connection, it was a day well spent.

Mahalo to all of the families who came out, participated, and made this event so meaningful. Your presence continues to strengthen our community in the most special way.
