For the 16th year in a row, Kāhala Nui continued its holiday tradition of caring for Hawai‘i’s kūpuna by donating 300 gift bags stocked with food, toiletries, and other daily essentials. The $30,000 donation was delivered to Palama Settlement, a nonprofit community organization serving residents in the Kalihi and Palama neighborhoods.

Each reusable bag was packed with thoughtful items, from Spam, canned soups, tuna kits, and protein drinks to snacks, prepared rice, toothpaste, toothbrushes, bandages, and more. Residents and associates joined forces to assemble the bags, turning the effort into a true community-building activity.

In the spirit of mālama, Kāhala Nui brings together our entire community each month to take a walk across campus together. This event series, “Walk Together Wednesday”, unites residents, staff, gold club members, and our community partners. We start by warming up, then we learn wellness tips from our community partners, take a brisk walk together, and conclude by enjoying healthy refreshments together.

Maria Kinsler, Vice President & COO, says about our mālama initiative “We want our mālama initiative to be more about our team; building a community, an ʻohana, and you don’t have to be Hawaiian to live mālama, you don’t even have to be local because it’s a spirit — a spirit of being kind, it’s a culture of being kind”.

Mahalo to our six Community Partners: Kōkua Kalihi Valley Comprehensive Family Services, Catholic Charities Hawaii, Alzheimer's Association - Hawaii, Palama Settlement, HMoW - Hawaiʻi Meals on Wheels, and Project Dana.

This October, Kāhala Nui gathered its residents for an early preview of the 2025 Walk to End Alzheimer’s – O'ahu . The residents participated in an on-campus walk two weeks in advance of the official event and have raised over $8,000 to date in support.

Participants kicked off the morning with a Zumba workout before strolling around the campus. Afterwards, they gathered to hear the Alzheimer’s Association share the latest progress in research and ongoing efforts to find a cure for Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias.

The Alzheimer's Association - Hawaii Walk to End Alzheimer’s is the world’s largest event to raise awareness and funds for Alzheimer’s care, support, and research. The Oahu Walk is scheduled to take place on Saturday, November 8, at Magic Island, Ala Moana Beach Park.
