A classroom lesson turned into a life lesson. 💙

As a teacher, he spent his days encouraging students to listen, learn and take action. But it was a routine colonoscopy that ended up teaching him one of the most important lessons of all: catch it early.

Scott Brown's story is a powerful reminder that colon cancer often has no warning signs — and that screening can save your life.

If you’re 45 or older, or have risk factors, talk with your doctor about getting screened. One appointment could make all the difference. 💪

Read more about Scott's story:

After a routine colonoscopy at Straub Benioff, educator Scott Brown’s early-stage colon cancer is caught, showing how timely screening can save lives in Hawaii today.

When the Maui wildfires showed how quickly an emergency can unfold, one thing became clear: Hawai‘i needed more burn care training.

Straub Benioff Medical Center’s Burn Care Unit responded by expanding its Advanced Burn Life Support program to monthly classes, making it the only provider of this training in Hawai‘i. These sessions help physicians, nurses and first responders build the skills needed to care for burn patients in the first 24 to 48 hours, a period that can greatly influence recovery. The training has been especially valuable for neighbor island teams who often deliver the initial care before patients are transferred to O‘ahu.

Straub Benioff Medical Center was named one of only three medium-sized hospitals in the nation to receive the NRC Health Excellence in Patient Experience Award for 2025. It is also the first and only hospital in Hawai‘i to earn this honor.

This recognition reflects the dedication of our entire Straub Benioff team and their commitment to putting patients first every day.

Congrats to our Straub Benioff ‘ohana for this outstanding achievement.

Recognized as One of America's 250 Best Hospitals by Healthgrades

When Dr. George F. Straub’s idea of forming a group of physicians to provide better, more specialized care for his patients evolved into what is now Straub Medical Center, it was just the beginning of many groundbreaking accomplishments and advancements in Hawaii’s health care industry.

Straub is a fully-integrated, not-for-profit health care provider with a 159-bed hospital in the heart of Honolulu, a network of neighborhood clinics, and a visiting specialist program that reaches throughout the State of Hawaii. Straub, with its more than 400 employed or contracted physicians who are leaders in their field, provides patients with expert diagnoses and treatments for more than 32 different medical specialties, including bone and joint, heart, cancer, endocrinology/diabetes, family medicine, gastroenterology, geriatric medicine, internal medicine, women’s health, vascular and urology, as well as serving as the Pacific Region’s only multi-disciplinary burn treatment center.

An affiliate of Hawaii Pacific Health, the state’s largest health care network, since December 21, 2001, Straub continues to introduce new technologies and innovative medical practices to Hawaii, such as minimally invasive cardiac surgery and total joint replacement. Straub continues the tradition of medical firsts in Hawaii, including arthroscopic knee surgery, artificial skin replacements for burns, interventional radiology, mitral valve surgery, and nuclear medicine.

Recognized as one of Healthgrades America’s 250 Best Hospitals™ in 2020, Straub has also received the Healthgrades Outstanding Patient Experience Award™ for 10 consecutive years and garnered other top awards, such as the 2020 Healthgrades America’s 100 Best Hospitals for Specialty Care in Gastrointestinal Care Excellence and General Surgery Excellence, and the 2020 Healthgrades Excellence in Pulmonary Care Award™.
