What I always pick up in Japan 🇯🇵

I always start with sunscreens—formulated with newer-generation UV filters not currently available in the U.S.
Not necessarily better, just different… with elegant, lightweight textures (and often more affordable)

I still love and use many of our sunscreens in the U.S., but I always appreciate experiencing formulations from other countries.

The UV spray is an easy go-to for reapplication (especially for the kids’ scalp/hair).

I also picked up the Curél powder in balm—great for dry, sensitive skin.

And a few of the newer sheet masks to try.

Just a few favorites I like to bring home with me.

Why do we treat the nasolabial folds—and why we don’t always go straight into the line? 💉

These “smile lines” often bother patients because they deepen with age and movement, especially in high-expression areas like around the mouth. But effective treatment requires more than just chasing lines—it’s about understanding anatomy, facial structure, and aging patterns.

🔎 In many cases, deep nasolabial folds are caused by midface volume loss—particularly in the medial cheek fat pads—which allows the tissue to descend and create a shadow. In those patients, we often begin by restoring cheek support before addressing the fold itself.

💉 But not every face needs that.
In certain ethnicities and facial types—especially those with naturally fuller cheeks or stronger midface structure—the nasolabial fold may be more prominent independent of midface volume loss. In these cases, direct filler into the fold is both appropriate and effective without the need for cheek augmentation.

✨ The approach is always customized. Sometimes we blend both: lifting the midface and then softening any remaining crease with a conservative amount of filler in the fold.

🌀 One thing to keep in mind: because this is a high-motion area, filler here tends to metabolize a bit more quickly than in more static regions.

Natural results always come from respecting your unique anatomy—and treating the cause, not just the crease.
