I’m still trying to piece together my thoughts and words around what is ongoing in my homeland 🍉.

What state of “normal” are we trying to get back to? That is one of the biggest catastrophes in this whole situation- that we return to a normal that should’ve never been considered normal to begin with.

The innocent civilians that have survived until this point are still being subject to brutal conditions and oppression. It’s not over, yet the media has made it seem that way.

We can’t walk around this or tip toe over it as if we’re trying to avoid stepping into something that spilled on the floor. This has left a stain on humanity and we can’t wash our hands clean from it. The least we can do is continue on this path of social justice and to honour the lives lost.

Our hearts are with the Caribbean as Hurricane Melissa approaches Jamaica. At BEAM, we’re uplifting the incredible people and teams already on the ground making moves to provide relief.

Support takes many shapes and forms. Some folks might have the means to donate, some might share and amplify these stories. Whatever you’re able to do or give, in these times, is meaningful.

Simply spreading the word helps.

Together, we stand — as a community, as the Caribbean family, as humanity.

If you are in the position to give financially, is preparing to provide emergency cash aid to families in the areas that are impacted the most.

asking for help is hard af. there’s a stigma around receiving SNAP/EBT. the shame from that stigma keeps people isolated and afraid.

make it easier on the folks who need support by
1️⃣ starting the conversation
2️⃣ letting people know you’re excited to help
3️⃣ being clear about what you can give — this gives people some peace of mind when they feel like they’re “asking for too much”

💪 we got this. we create a culture of care for each other when governments fail us.

The federal government shutdown is coming for people’s food, sending state officials scrambling for stopgap measures to keep people from going hungry.

More than 150,000 Hawaiʻi residents will not receive their food stamps next month, as effects of the budget impasse strike widely into daily life.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture has told states “there is not sufficient funding” for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program and to “hold off on sending payments” for November, according to Scott Morishige, administrator of the state division that oversees SNAP.

Even if the government shutdown were to end today, Morishige said the USDA hasn’t said when November benefits would be paid out, though they would later be reimbursed.

Repost from .made

Non-Natives love to criticize what they helped destroy.
They point fingers at broken homes, cracked windows,
overgrown yards, and addictions,
but never at the hand that swung the axe
that cut us from our roots.

They see symptoms, never the sickness.
They don’t see genocide,
they see “bad decisions.”
They don’t see boarding schools,
they see “lack of parenting.”
They don’t see intergenerational trauma,
they see “welfare abuse.”
They don’t see centuries of policy meant to erase us,
they see “laziness.”

You call it history.
We call it survival.

“Kill the Indian, save the man”
that was policy, not metaphor.
And now, you’re shocked at the aftermath?
You marvel at the fire still burning in our blood
while standing on the ashes your ancestors left.

And now that oppression knocks at your door,
you rise up crying “No kings!”
Welcome.
You’ve just arrived at the starting line of a race
we’ve been running for five hundred years.

You shout about freedom
while ours was outlawed,
our songs criminalized, our children stolen,
our ceremonies buried and burned.
And still, you don’t see.
You only notice the storm
when it floods your house.

We’ve lived in the downpour for generations.
And yet,
we still plant seeds.
We still sing.
We still rise.

Your “sprinkles of freedom”
were always watered with our blood.
So before you critique our homes,
our streets, our pain,
ask yourself who built your empire,
and who paid the price for your comfort.

Because we are still here.
And we remember everything.

And still,
I stand with you.
Hoping to be seen and heard,
healing while holding the line
between what was taken
and what still grows.
Standing with my ancestors’ strength,
carrying and holding the hands
of the next generation,
planting them firmly in the soil of remembrance,
so they too may rise
with the light of a freedom
that belongs to all of us.
Watering the seeds with my tears.

If your definition of “healthy” doesn’t include making sure people can eat at all, maybe it’s time to start there.

Millions of families are about to lose access to food with the halting of SNAP — and meanwhile, the wellness world is still yelling about seed oils and sugar.

Nutrition isn’t about purity, perfection, shame or scare tactics — it’s about access and enoughness.

We can choose a version of health that’s bigger than fear — one grounded in justice, empathy, and care.

(PS: a post for another day, but this type of food scarcity will have a lasting impact on eating disorders, this is all deeply connected)
