Women with mild anaemia before pregnancy may see the greatest benefits from small-quantity lipid-based nutrient supplements (SQ-LNS), especially when started at least 3 months before conception. These benefits include improved markers of intrauterine growth like birth weight, length, and head circumference.
The impact of SQ-LNS varied depending on pre-pregnancy haemoglobin levels. Notably, women with haemoglobin between 90–99 g/L showed the most significant improvements when supplements were started preconception.
This underscores the importance of identifying women before pregnancy who could benefit most from targeted nutrition interventions.
