An interesting study from the University of Michigan and the National Eye Institute have concluded that older adults who suffer from a severe lack of vision are 3 to 4 times more likely to experience a fall when their households have certain hazards. This includes broken floors, lack of grab bars, and more.
Researchers used the Snellen visual acuity chart and noted that each one-line difference is correlated to a 31% increase in fall risk. The loss of each one-line on the contrast sensitivity chart raises the risk by 14%.
It is recommended to get regular eye examinations, repair one's home consistently, and improve lighting to prevent a fall.
