Marriage is a sacred and holy covenant ordained by God that takes place between a man and a woman. Any marriage that begins outside of these boundaries is bound for turbulence, and in many cases, utter destruction that impacts generations that arise from it. In fact, today, over half of all marriages will end in divorce, both inside and outside the church.
As a counselor who specializes in pre-marital and marital therapy, and one who has been married nearly 30 years, Kathy understands all too well the various dynamics that lead couples into troubled waters. Depending on anything or anyone but our relationships with Jesus for our emotional healing is simply an ineffective numbing device. Whether it is food, drugs, alcohol, s*x, shopping, or any other vice, it will only act as a temporary fix to a long-term consequence. As Stephen Arterburn states in his book, Healing is a Choice, "We become hooked on the numbing device during the process of trying to return to the state of numbness. That dependency causes additional consequences and pain, and our lives spin helplessly out of control until we come to the conclusion that there is only one way out. We must finally feel the emotions we dreaded. We must reenter the pain, resolve it, and then move on with our lives, connected to others, feeling the reality of what we are experiencing right now, no matter how uncomfortable it is."

Life is difficult! Relationships are challenging at best!

Sometimes, these realities become unmanageable, and we find ourselves struggling to stay afloat. Sometimes, we simply need a little extra help getting our balance, a listening ear to help us sort things out, a safe environment to reach conclusions, and make necessary adjustments.

My name is Shelby Johnson, and I stand ready to help you in this capacity. I am a second-semester intern through Liberty University's Clinical Mental Health Counseling master's program where I have gained the knowledge and skills necessary to help you navigate the difficult places in life.
