My parents were born, raised and married in Italy. They came to the United States to start their life and have a family. While I often ponder how they survived their first New England winter and decided to put down roots here, I never question the steadiness of their resolve and their courage. There weren’t a lot of first generation families in Sudbury, Massachusetts back in 1975, however, based on the color of our skin, we could skate by unnoticed for the most part.… until of course, one of our parents had to speak, or someone on my brother’s hockey team saw his last name on his jersey, or someone saw me bringing chicken cutlets to lunch, rather than a turkey sandwich. That kid playing against my brother’s team? He called him a “spic.” Just a dumb kid. Likely parroting his ignorant, hate filled parents. And…we were not latin….just not WHITE. I digress…

My parents, being Italian and catholic, have always also been conservative. This made for some very interesting conversations around the dinner table, given that their youngest child, and the only girl, was fiercely liberal. My mother at some point decided to convert to US citizenship. My father chose to keep his Italian citizenship and live here with the permission of a green card. We have disagreed on a lot of things over the years. But I have to think that even my dad would be appalled at what is happening these days, as it pertains to immigrants.

Since I opened my studio, I was always very clear about keeping the major divisive topics out of classes. Historically, we don’t talk about politics, we don’t talk about religion, we don’t talk about how we eat or how we choose to raise our kids.

While I maintain that Shanti is a studio that welcomes all (with the exception of people who are rude/entitled etc…a few of which I have actually asked not to come back over the years,) I feel like it’s the right time to also make some things really clear. If you have ever spent any time with me as a student you likely would know this, but I just want to be fully transparent because it’s time.

I do not support this administration.

I think the current president is a criminal and dangerous.

The actions of ICE are unconstitutional, abhorrent and against the foundational teachings of Yoga.

Perhaps I will lose some students as a result of my sharing this so plainly. I’m past caring about that, at this point. I’m more interested in standing in my truth and continuing to support the notion that caring about people and for people is what matters most. The studio will continue to be a safe space for you to take solace. The studio will continue to be a place for you to remember to breathe. The studio will continue to be a place for you to tap into your own inner strength, but also the strength of the beautiful community that surrounds you.

I’m going to share a little secret 🤫🙃❤️‍🔥 sometimes the energy we co-create in this space is so profoundly healing and true that I just need to linger a little bit longer after everyone has gone and feel held by it. We did that today. We really did. Thank you all for showing up so authentically and raising the collective vibration so we can move through the world, more skillfully, and with an open heart. My deepest gratitude to you all.
