I know you've heard about blue light and screens before bed. But I want to talk about the OTHER side of that equation β€” what the RIGHT kind of light in the evening can actually do for your nervous system.

Red and near-infrared light wavelengths don't suppress melatonin the way blue light does. In fact, therapeutic red light in the evening actually supports your body's natural transition toward rest by:

"IS RED LIGHT THERAPY SAFE FOR MY KIDS?"

Yes β€” and I get this question so often I'm dedicating a whole post to it.

Red light therapy uses non-UV, non-ionizing wavelengths of light. There's no heat damage, no radiation risk, no side effects associated with proper use. The research on pediatric applications is growing and it's encouraging.

Here's what I love about RLT for families:

For littles β€” it's gentle. No needles, no supplements, no side effects. Just light working at the cellular level to support energy, regulation, and healing.

For kids with sensory sensitivities β€” the warm, calming quality of red light is often actually soothing rather than stimulating (unlike so many other clinical environments).

For the whole family β€” it's something you can do together. We've had families make it part of their evening wind-down routine, pairing it with the dim-light, low-stimulation environment that supports good sleep onset.

YOUR GUT AND YOUR ALLERGIES ARE HAVING A CONVERSATION. 🌿

And your nervous system is in the middle of it.

Here's something most families don't hear at the allergist's office:

Up to 70% of your immune system lives in your gut. The health of your gut microbiome directly influences how your immune system identifies and responds to environmental triggers like pollen, dust, and pet dander.

A compromised gut = an immune system without a good filter.

And here's where it gets interesting for our families: the gut and the brain talk to each other constantly through the vagus nerve β€” that same nerve that runs through the upper cervical spine, that same nerve we talk about in relation to sleep, sensory processing, and nervous system regulation.

It's all connected. On purpose. By design.

This is why I'm never surprised when a child with chronic allergies also has digestive issues, sleep struggles, or sensory sensitivities. They share the same neurological root.

And this is why addressing subluxation β€” restoring that vagal communication pathway β€” often helps multiple things at once.

Not because chiropractic does everything.
Because God's design is integrated. Treating the system honors that integration.

THE REASON YOUR CHILD CAN'T WIND DOWN AT NIGHT πŸŒ™

It's not the screen time. It's not the sugar at dinner. It's not even the schedule.

Well β€” those things don't help. But they're not the root.

Here's what I want parents to understand:

Winding down is not a willpower issue. It's a NEUROLOGICAL event.

For your child's body to transition into sleep, the nervous system has to complete a very specific shift β€” from sympathetic (alert, activated, GO mode) to parasympathetic (safe, calm, rest mode).

That shift is coordinated by the vagus nerve. And the vagus nerve runs directly through the upper cervical spine β€” the top of the neck.

When subluxation is present in that area, the signal gets disrupted. The body tries to downshift... and can't fully get there.

So your child lies in bed, exhausted but wired. Eyes open. Mind racing. Body tense even though they desperately want to sleep.

That's not a child who won't wind down.
That's a child whose nervous system physically can't complete the transition.

I see this constantly in practice β€” and I also see what happens when we address it. When we restore proper movement and alignment to the upper cervical spine, families tell us bedtime changes within weeks.

Not because we fixed sleep.
Because we cleared the pathway God designed for it.

RED LIGHT AT NIGHT IS NOT JUST AESTHETIC. πŸŒ™

I know it looks like a vibe. The warm red glow, the cozy atmosphere. But there's actual science behind why red light in the evening is so different from the blue light coming from your screens.

Here's the quick version:

Blue light (phones, tablets, overhead lighting) suppresses melatonin production and signals to your brain: IT'S DAYTIME. STAY ALERT.

Red and near-infrared light wavelengths do the opposite β€” they don't suppress melatonin, and therapeutic RLT has been shown to support healthy circadian rhythm regulation and improve sleep quality.

In our office, we use red light therapy as part of a whole-body approach to nervous system regulation. Because here's the truth:

If your cells are depleted, your mitochondria are underperforming, and your body is running on empty β€” no amount of good sleep hygiene will fully compensate for that.

Chiropractic care helps the nervous system communicate the message that it's safe to rest.
Red light therapy helps give the cells the energy to actually DO the restoration work during sleep.

"BUT GOD MADE THE POLLEN TOO." 🌼

I love this pushback. I really do.

He did! He made pollen. He made pet dander and dust and all the things that send some of our kids and adults into a spiral of sneezing and itchy eyes every spring.

But here's what I know to be true: He also made a body with an IMMUNE SYSTEM capable of living alongside all of those things without being wrecked by them.

The question isn't "why is pollen bad?" The question is "why is my body responding to it like a five-alarm fire?"

That answer lives in the nervous system.

When the nervous system is regulated β€” when there's no interference disrupting the brain-body communication β€” the immune system knows how to respond PROPORTIONALLY.

The problem isn't usually what's outside your body. It's whether your body is resourced to handle what's outside.

God didn't make junk. He made an immune system that was designed to be resilient, adaptable, and capable. Sometimes we just need to remove what's interfering with that incredible design.

Common and normal aren't the same thing.
Seasonal suffering every year? Common. But not inevitable.
