VALENTINE'S DAY: The Most Loving Thing You Can Do 💕

Today is about LOVE. And I want to talk about what love looks like when you're the parent of a struggling child.

Love isn't just hearts and flowers.

Love is:
• Making the 8th therapy appointment this month
• Researching at 2am when you should be sleeping
• Holding your melting-down child without judgment
• Advocating fiercely when others don't understand
• Never giving up on finding answers
• Being willing to try something new

You are LOVING your child well. Every day. In every way.

But what if I told you that one of the most loving things you could do is understand what's happening in their nervous system?

DYSAUTONOMIA: The Word That Explains Everything

Have you heard this term before? Most parents haven't.

But if your child struggles with sensory processing, you NEED to understand it.

**Dysautonomia = dysfunction of the autonomic nervous system**

Your autonomic nervous system has two modes:
• **Sympathetic:** Fight-or-flight, survival mode
• **Parasympathetic:** Rest-digest-heal mode

In a healthy nervous system, these work in balance. Your child can ramp up when needed and calm down when safe.

But when "The Perfect Storm" happens - when layers of stress and subluxation accumulate - the nervous system gets STUCK in sympathetic dominance.

Stuck in survival mode. All. The. Time.

This is dysautonomia. And THIS is why your child:
• Melts down over small things (everything feels like a threat)
• Can't handle certain textures (body is hyper-vigilant)
• Struggles with sleep (can't shift to rest mode)
• Has digestive issues (sympathetic shuts down digestion)
• Can't focus or sit still (trying desperately to regulate)
• Overreacts to sensory input (nervous system in overdrive)

None of this is willful. None of this is "bad behavior."

This is a child whose nervous system is chronically stuck in a state meant only for actual danger.

And here's the beautiful hope: **dysautonomia can be addressed.**

When we remove subluxation - when we help the nervous system shift out of sympathetic dominance - everything changes.

Not because chiropractic is magic. But because God designed our bodies to heal when given the chance.

God didn't make junk. He gave us an incredible nervous system with innate healing intelligence. Sometimes we just need to remove what's interfering with that ability.

IT STARTED AT BIRTH 👶

"Dr. Katie, could my child's sensory issues really be related to how they were born?"

Yes. And here's why:

Birth - even "normal, uncomplicated" birth - places enormous stress on a baby's delicate spine and nervous system.

Think about it: your baby goes from a warm, dark, quiet womb to being pushed (or pulled) through a narrow birth canal OR lifted out through a surgical incision.

Add in:
• Vacuum or forceps extraction
• Long, difficult labor
• Positioning stress (breech, posterior, asynclitic)
• C-section pulling and pressure
• Cord around the neck

And you have a newborn whose upper cervical spine - the area that affects the ENTIRE nervous system - experienced significant trauma.

For some babies, the body adapts. For others, that initial subluxation becomes the foundation for:
• Colic and fussiness
• Feeding difficulties
• Sleep struggles
• Delayed milestones
• And eventually... sensory processing challenges

This isn't about making you feel guilty about birth. This is about understanding that **birth matters to nervous system development.**
