BHK Child Development

BHK works with local schools, public health, mental health, and other human-service agencies to provide comprehensive, quality programs.

BHK is a non-profit community agency and the region’s largest provider of early education and care, serving families in Baraga, Houghton, and Keweenaw Counties. Some programs give priority to low-income families and children with special needs, but all familes are encouraged to register.

For this Teacher Tuesday we focus on our April 1st Lego League Celebration for the Houghton/Hancock classrooms with Ms. Peiying, Ms. Nancy, and Ms. Tara!

We are on the last of our 3-year grant cycle for the Lego League experience focused on STEM skills to build teambuilding and open play experiences.

Our North End is holding a Can drive organized by parents to support funds to repair the roof at our Centennial school! Donations can be dropped off at any BHK site to make it's way to Centennial. Thank you for all of your support!

The weather is warming up and so is the fun in our Ryan Center EHS classrooms! We can't wait to get outside and see green grass!

🦷 Smiles all around at BHK! 🦷

Students at our Centennial Center and Lake Linden classroom recently enjoyed a special in-school dental day, thanks to the Upper Great Lakes Family Health Center’s mobile dental bus. Registered students received screenings, cleanings, and learned easy ways to keep their smiles healthy every day.

This event made dental care convenient and stress-free for families while helping children feel confident about visiting the dentist.
We’re grateful for this partnership and the support it brings to our students’ health and well-being!

Cat and the Hat spent some time visiting various sites and schools from the Bay all the way up to the Copper Country over the past several weeks! Most children were very excited to meet Mr. Cat in person while some kiddos observed from a safe distance with a teacher or parent nearby😋

Early literacy is crucial because it lays the foundation for cognitive, social, and emotional development, preparing children for lifelong learning and success. Take a moment to read to your child. You both will enjoy it!

This week we feature the Baraga County classrooms of L'Anse EHS, June Forest EHS and Baraga Best Start! In L'Anse, children experienced working on math concepts and big body movement on the snow hills.
At June Forest, so many opportunities for shared play spaces and materials!
Baraga Best Start worked as an engineering team to unearth fossils as archaeologists and playing tic-tac-toe

TEACHER TUESDAY!
This week teachers at Ryan Pre-K and Barkell Pre-k shared how they are working on using writing tools to make letters and letter like shapes along with patterns. When it was too cold outside, we brought the outdoors in, with some great snow activities and using the large parachute. Who didn't love the big parachute when we were all younger?!

TEACHER TUESDAY
This week our classrooms at the L'Anse Preschool, CJ Sullivan Preschool, and CJ Sullivan Best start show us how important moving our bodies outdoors is and also how environmental print in preschool can prepare our students for reading and writing in kindergarten.
