I shared this meme with everyone this week because it spoke to me. Tonight I am living the experience. My relationship to food and tv has been all over the place my whole life, negative and positive. I’m so fortunate to have found a more neutral/positive outlook, especially because I can offer the same to my kids. Right now I feel calm, regulated, comfortable, and happy; it’s a good place to be.

A salad for dinner isn’t healthy if you didn’t get enough carbohydrates earlier in the day.

A brownie sundae is healthy for someone recovering from anorexia and is learning to make peace with food.

Health is an abstract concept and the word “healthy” truly has no objective place in the realm of describing food.
All this does is attach morality to food.

And when you start attaching morality to a relative, subjective, abstract concept, this can only lead to disordered thoughts and behaviors towards food.

What’s “healthy” for you could literally kill another person under certain circumstances.

The status of your health is contingent on multiple factors that are endlessly changing and interrelating.

There is not a single food item that is objectively “healthier” than another food.

Context MATTERS.

When we start labeling foods as “healthy” or “unhealthy” it clouds our ability to accurately tune into our bodies to figure out and trust what it ACTUALLY needs in any given moment. To trust what is ACTUALLY HEALTHY in any given moment.

Dismantling food rules and deconstructing morality around food choices is what’s ACTUALLY healthy.

I had to make some chicken soup since everyone in our house has/had a cold. I decided to do this creamy version with rice based on a TikTok video. Everyone agreed that we are now a chicken and rice house, rather than chicken noodle.

Welcome!

On the Food Side is a social media page meant for connection. It connects me to you, my nutrition practice to my blog, my personal food and nutrition values to a public space, and so much more. My hope, and intention, is to share a message about the positive aspects of food; how it can be a source of pleasure rather than stress, how it can offer care and nurturing instead of control and judgement. I want to create a movement and shift away from restriction, control, and deprivation and move into a space of acceptance, balance, flexibility, and self care. I am utilizing my professional skills as a registered dietitian, my practice skills as a yoga teacher, and my personal passion for food and writing to create a page that promotes a positive relationship between you and your food! Welcome to On the Food Side!
