The Black Maternal Mortality Forum was truly a powerful conversation that highlighted struggles black women may face within the healthcare system that can lead to poor outcomes during pregnancy or after childbirth. Our panelists gave insight to their worlds/practices and their thoughts on this matter.

We would like to extend our thanks and gratitude to our awesome panelist, Dr. Elena Mann and Courtney Malveaux, LPC-S, PMH-C and wonderful moderator, Whitney Jason, MSN, RN on behalf of Region 3 Louisiana Department of Health- Office of Public Health, AmeriHealth Caritas La, and Healthy Start at Start Corporation! Thanks to our partners for a great event.

Black women are four times more likely to die from pregnancy related complications than white women. We must continue to spread awareness and educate our communities and mothers.

🔑Key takeaways:
Mothers, Get out of your own way! Get the support you need and advocate for yourself! Bring someone with you to an appointment that may be able to attest to the pain or symptoms you may not remember.

Clinicians, Get curious and interested! Spend time addressing concerns patients may have. Take the extra mile to make sure she feels heard and seen. Investigate the issue; don't dismiss her. Don't judge her. Implicit bias can show up in a multitude of ways, but let's combat that with genuine care!
