This past week, there was a strong collaborative effort to address a nuisance encampment on Canniff Street.

Our Harris County Sheriff's Office Homeless Outreach Team (HOT) and Employ2Empower, collaborated with Jerry Garcia, Harris County Constable Precinct 2 Homeless Outreach Team, Houston Police Department Differential Response Team (DRT), the Houston’s National Coalition for the Homeless, and the Houston Mayor's Office all came together with a shared goal—providing support and solutions for those in need while addressing community concerns.

Over the past few weeks, outreach teams have been consistently engaging individuals at this location, building trust and offering resources. During this operation, teams continued those efforts by connecting individuals to services, while E2E conducted interviews to offer opportunities through their workforce program.

Our Homeless Outreach Team has also been actively working alongside other initiatives across the county, continuing to expand partnerships and identify long-term solutions to better serve our community.

Once outreach efforts were completed, HPD’s DRT began the decommissioning process in a coordinated and thoughtful manner.

This is what collaboration looks like—multiple agencies and partners working together to create safer, healthier communities while ensuring individuals are treated with dignity and respect.

Had a great time at the International Law Enforcement Educators and Trainers Association (ILEETA) conference! Members of the Harris County Sheriff's Office were proud to attend and take part in meaningful conversations and impactful training alongside police instructors from around the world.

From Latin America to Canada to Ukraine, it was an incredible opportunity to collaborate, share ideas, and learn from one another. These experiences continue to strengthen our approach to training and help us better serve our communities.

Looking forward to bringing back what we learned and continuing to build strong partnerships both locally and internationally. 🌎👮‍♂️

Today, NAMI Greater Houston hosted the 2026 NAMIWalks Kick-Off as we begin preparing for this year’s walk on May 16. We encourage everyone to come out, get involved, and support this important event that raises awareness for mental health and helps connect individuals and families with critical resources.

NAMI continues to be a valued community partner, and we are grateful for their ongoing collaboration and support. They have been a great supporter of our Harris County Sheriff's Office Crisis Intervention Response Team (CIRT) and our Behavioral Health Training Team, helping strengthen our shared mission of improving responses to individuals experiencing a mental health crisis.

Events like NAMIWalks help bring people together, reduce stigma, and ensure those in need know they are not alone. We look forward to seeing everyone out at the walk on May 16! 💚

Thank you to our partners from Travis County, Texas - Government for taking the time to visit the Harris County Sheriff's Office and The Harris Center for Mental Health and IDD to learn more about the innovative programs we have in place to serve our community.

During their visit, we shared information on several of our diversion and re-entry initiatives that focus on connecting individuals to resources and support rather than allowing them to remain stuck in the criminal justice system. These programs are designed to address underlying needs, strengthen community partnerships, and improve outcomes for the individuals and families we serve.

We appreciate the opportunity to exchange ideas and highlight the importance of collaboration between agencies. By working together and sharing best practices, we can continue to build stronger, safer, and healthier communities for everyone. 🤝

This week, members from Bexar County visited several Harris County Sheriff's Office and The Harris Center for Mental Health and IDD facilities to learn more about the collaborative work being done in Harris County to address behavioral health and public safety.

During the visit, the group toured locations such as the Diversion Center, where individuals who may have a nexus can be diverted away from the traditional criminal justice system and connected to appropriate care, services, and support. These efforts reflect the strong partnerships between law enforcement, behavioral health professionals, and community organizations working together to provide more effective responses to individuals in crisis.

Harris County continues to prioritize innovative, collaborative approaches that focus on treatment, de-escalation, and connecting people to the help they need while maintaining public safety.

We’re grateful to all of our partners from across East Harris County who came together for the Harris County Sheriff's Office Community Hub — representing Baytown, Crosby, Pasadena, North Shore/Channelview, and the Cloverleaf area.

The Community Hub brings stakeholders to the table with one shared goal: connecting individuals and families to critical resources outside of traditional law enforcement response. By collaborating with community organizations, service providers, and local leaders, we’re able to identify needs early and offer meaningful support that promotes long-term stability.

This is what strong partnerships look like — working together to strengthen our communities and ensure help is available for those who need it most. 🤝

We invite our community to join us at the YMCA for a meet and greet with Harris County Public Health, Harris County Precinct 2, and the Harris County Sheriff's Office as we come together to discuss public safety in the Cloverleaf and Wallisville areas.

This is an opportunity to connect directly with your local law enforcement and county partners, ask questions, share concerns, and learn more about the proactive efforts underway to enhance safety and quality of life in our neighborhoods.

Strong communities are built through collaboration, and your voice matters. We look forward to engaging in meaningful conversation and continuing to work together to keep Cloverleaf and Wallisville safe.

Our partnership with Career and Recovery through the Employ2Empower (E2E) program continues to make a meaningful impact in our community. This week alone, participants have been hard at work cleaning parks across multiple precincts, assisting at the Houston Food Bank, and participating in training days focused on workforce development and community resources.

E2E is a well-established program designed to empower individuals experiencing housing instability by providing structured work opportunities, skill development, and access to supportive services. The mission is clear—help participants rebuild stability, gain employment experience, and successfully transition back into the workforce.

When public safety agencies and community partners collaborate effectively, the results speak for themselves: stronger neighborhoods, restored dignity, and real pathways to long-term success.

Huge thank you to the Police Executive Research Forum for hosting an outstanding ICAT Conference.

Harris County Sheriff's Office Lieutenant Gomez had the opportunity to present on our ICAT program, sharing our implementation strategies, challenges, and key lessons learned along the way. It was a great platform to highlight how intentional training, leadership buy-in, and consistency can make ICAT effective and sustainable.

The conference featured outstanding presentations focused on de-escalation training and addressing skill decay—critical components in ensuring officers retain and apply these skills in real-world situations.

Events like this are essential as we continue working collaboratively to strengthen training, improve outcomes, and better serve our communities through safer, more effective responses.
