The month of February sneaked up on us so quickly, but we couldn’t let it pass without saying thank you to everyone who joined us for our Bourbon Street Senior Network Breakfast at Apex Oaks at Clear Lake!

What a wonderful day at Apex Oaks at Clear Lake celebrating Valentine’s Day!

Our residents were full of smiles and excitement during our St. Valentine’s Day Celebration, especially when it was time to reveal the King and Queen of Valentine’s 2026. Choosing was not easy—we truly have so many beautiful ladies and handsome gentlemen—but in the end, we are proud to crown Doyle and Phyllis as our King and Queen!

A heartfelt thank you to Carla Jones from North Star Hospice for the lovely piano music surprise that touched our residents’ hearts, and thank you to all our wonderful families for your continued love and support.

We also extend our gratitude to Xotic Soundz DJ JP for the fantastic music that kept everyone dancing, smiling, and celebrating together.

Sensory Activities Matter at Apex Oaks at Clear Lake

Sensory activities are an essential part of our Montessori-based program, especially for residents in the advanced stages of dementia. These meaningful experiences provide gentle stimulation while promoting calm, comfort, and quality of life.

Through the Montessori method for dementia care, even small details—like the color and familiarity of objects—make a powerful difference. Using bright, contrasting colors with familiar items such as golf balls and ice cream scoopers helps bypass cognitive decline by tapping into long-term memory. These purposeful tools can improve focus, reduce agitation, and foster a sense of dignity and accomplishment.

At Apex Oaks at Clear Lake, we truly value our residents’ social lives and independence. A dementia diagnosis does not take away a person’s ability to make choices. Through our Montessori-based approach, we empower our residents to stay involved, express their preferences, and participate in meaningful decision-making.

One of the ways we do this is through our Outings Committee, where residents come together to discuss, plan, and decide where they would like to go. Recently, the committee chose a bowling outing at Main Event, and it was a wonderful experience!

Our residents enjoyed a fun game of bowling, rented their bowling shoes, and shared pizza for lunch—many proudly said it was the best pizza in town! It was truly emotional and inspiring to see our residents fully engaged, socializing, and continuing to be active members of the community.

A heartfelt thank you to the amazing staff at Main Event for their kindness, patience, and outstanding assistance. Your support made this outing extra special for our residents.

Moments like these remind us that life, joy, and connection continue—at every stage.

Armchair Travel: A Wonderful Journey Without Leaving Home

Armchair travel is truly a magical activity for our residents! From the comfort of their own chairs, our residents took a trip to New York City to celebrate a beautiful Winter Wonderland experience.

Together, we explored what winter looks like in New York, visited famous landmarks, and enjoyed a cozy afternoon with hot chocolate topped with marshmallows and cookies, all while listening to the timeless music of Frank Sinatra

Preparing armchair travel experiences is especially meaningful for residents living with dementia. These activities offer a safe and calming way to enjoy the cognitive, emotional, and sensory benefits of travel—without the stress or physical challenges of actual trips. It sparks memories, encourages conversation, and brings joy in a familiar, comforting environment.

Learning Something New Every Day at Apex Oaks at Clear Lake

Every day, our residents at Apex Oaks at Clear Lake enjoy learning something new. Recently, our wonderful resident activity leader Shizoko guided residents in creating beautiful origami, encouraging creativity, focus, and hands-on engagement.

Through our Montessori-based methods, residents learn new or adapted skills in a supportive, failure-free environment. This approach is especially meaningful for individuals living with dementia, as it enhances cognitive function, promotes independence, leadership and supports emotional well-being. By focusing on remaining strengths rather than losses, these purposeful activities reduce anxiety, build confidence, and improve overall quality of life.
