Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) is more than just “winter blues.” It’s a form of depression that appears during fall and winter and can last for months. Around 5% of adults experience SAD each year, and older adults are also at risk.

In seniors, symptoms may include low mood, fatigue, oversleeping, increased cravings for carbohydrates, and social withdrawal. SAD in older people is often overlooked because it can resemble other age-related conditions or be mistaken for normal seasonal tiredness.

To reduce the impact of SAD, seniors should try to get more natural daylight, sitting near bright windows or taking short walks during the daytime. Light therapy, when recommended by a doctor, can also be very effective. Maintaining a regular routine, staying physically active, eating balanced meals, and keeping social connections all help stabilize mood. It’s also important to check vitamin D levels and seek professional support if symptoms last for several weeks.

SAD is treatable, and with the right steps, winter can feel much brighter.
