February is Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD) Awareness Month: What You Need to Know 👁️

Did you know that age-related macular degeneration is a leading cause of vision loss for adults over the age of 50? AMD affects the macula, the small, central part of the retina that allows us to see fine details clearly. While it doesn’t cause total blindness; it can significantly blur the “straight-ahead” vision we need for driving, reading faces, and seeing the world in detail.

Understanding the Two Types:

Dry AMD: The most common form (about 80% of cases). It happens when parts of the macula get thinner with age and tiny clumps of protein (drusen) grow. It progresses slowly over several years.

Wet AMD: A less common but much more serious form. It happens when new, abnormal blood vessels grow under the retina and leak fluid. This can cause much faster vision loss.

How can you reduce your risk?
👉Know your family history. Genetics play a major role.
👉Eat for your eyes. Incorporate “eye foods” like kale, spinach, salmon, and colorful fruits.
👉Manage your health. Control blood pressure and cholesterol.
👉Protect your eyes. Wear UV-rated sunglasses every time you go outside.
