In light of the new dietary guidelines promoting up to 1.6 grams protien per kilogram body weight coming out yesterday, I thought it would be fun to continue our Mr. McStoney series today with a lesson on protein.

🥩The evidence is abundantly clear that a high protein diet, especially coming from MEAT, can contribute to kidney stones in susceptible people?! When protein is metabolized, acid is produced. Your kidneys and bones have to neutralize (or buffer) that acid. This puts your bones at risk by breaking them down. That calcium from bone breakdown ends up in your urine, increasing the risk of kidney stones. All the extra acid also reduces the pH and amount of citrate in your urine - both of which increase risk of the most common types of kidney stones.

🥦Also, despite the fact that animal protein has ZERO oxalate in it, it could increase urine oxalate levels by promoting liver production of oxalate (which contributes to urine oxalate levels MUCH more than how much oxalate is in your food)

🥚🍒When protein is eaten as part of a balanced diet and not in excess, the alkaline (or base) produced by the fruits and vegetables helps neutralize the acid, protecting our bones and kidneys.

🙋🏼‍♀️Work with your dietitian to figure out how much protein you should be eating. For most people, keeping meat portions to no more than 3-4oz and choosing only 1 protein source per meal (meat OR beans OR eggs OR nuts, etc.) are good guidelines.

🍗Patients are often concerned about getting enough protein. However, if you eat any meat, poultry or fish, it is actually EASY to get enough protein in your diet to protect your muscles, even if your exercise. ❌You DO NOT need that protein powder they sell at the gym (or, likely all that protein being recommended in the new dietary guidelines).

Stay safe friends!

I love the statement from our Academy. Also, just a friendly reminder that most health insurance plans cover seeing Registered Dietitians (and Certified Nutrition Specialists) as preventative care ***which means 100% covered!*** Find an RD who accepts insurance and get a thorough nutrition assessment and personalized nutrition prescription. Not everyone needs large amounts of protein. Not everyone needs to cut their carbs to only 2-4 servings.

The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics acknowledges the release of the Dietary Guidelines for Americans, 2025–2030 (DGAs). While many recommendations align with longstanding nutrition science, other elements raise significant concerns.

Medical Nutrition Therapy is so important. I love being able to help my patients feel better with nutrition. And it’s usually covered 100% by insurance as preventative care. Go seek a registered dietitian if you need it. 🤗🍎🔬🍽️

The Academy released a new position paper reaffirming that MNT provided by RDNs is a proven, evidenced-based approach to improving health outcomes, reducing health disparities and lowering health care costs for people living with or at risk for chronic diseases.

Whole grains 🥖🌾

Whole grains 🥖🌾

September is . Make whole grains a delicious and nutritious part of your kidney eating plan.

• Whole grains can be good sources of vitamins and minerals as well as fiber. While typically higher in potassium and phosphorus than refined grains, they can still be included in a kidney-friendly diet. The phosphorus in whole grains is bound to fiber and poorly absorbed. The benefits of the fiber in whole-grains can help manage potassium levels in the body by supporting more frequent bowel movements and lowering blood sugar.

• Whole grains include barley (not pearled), quinoa, oats, brown rice and pastas, and breads and cereals made with whole-grain flours. When reading food labels, look for the words “whole grain” listed as the first ingredient or the second ingredient after water.

• Remember to check commercially prepared whole grain products for sodium content and “phos” in the ingredients list.

It’s National Clean Out the Fridge Day! Time to declutter and make space for fresh goodness. A clean fridge not only looks good but promotes food safety.

Just wanted to give everyone an update. I am waiting on my 5th baby to arrive any day now. She’s a little late at this point, but due date may be off too. Was expecting an end of August baby, now she’ll be a September baby! I am so grateful for all my patients’, family & friends’ well wishes and prayers for a healthy baby & delivery. And also for understanding as I take some time off preparing for this little one’s arrival and first couple months of maternity leave. I really have the best patients/clients! You all work so hard in our sessions! I’ll definitely be updating once baby arrives.

As always, in health!
