Depression doesn’t just affect your mood — it affects your entire body.
Untreated depression is more than emotional pain.
It changes brain chemistry, hormone balance, and immune function — and can set the stage for serious chronic illnesses.

Here’s what the research shows:

1️⃣ Higher risk of heart disease and heart attacks — and greater mortality after a cardiac event.
2️⃣ Increased risk of type 2 diabetes due to cortisol and inflammation disrupting glucose control.
3️⃣ Higher likelihood of stroke.
4️⃣ Greater risk of dementia from brain inflammation and structural changes.
5️⃣ Amplified pain perception — worsening chronic pain conditions like fibromyalgia, arthritis, and migraines.
6️⃣ Increased abdominal fat and metabolic syndrome, raising risk for diabetes and heart disease.
7️⃣ Weakened immune function and increased vulnerability to infections and autoimmune flare-ups.

The good news: treatment makes a real difference.
Therapy, antidepressants, exercise, sleep, and social support all help the brain and body heal.
Depression is treatable — and early care matters.

If you or someone you know is struggling, reach out to a licensed clinician or call 988 in the U.S. for immediate support.

Antidepressants Explained: Myths vs. Facts

Many people hesitate to start antidepressants because of misconceptions — fears of dependence, emotional “numbness,” or that they’ll need to take them forever.

In this short video, I explain how antidepressants actually work in the brain, what to expect when starting them, and why they’re just one part of recovery.

Depression is a medical condition, not a character flaw — and treatment can help your brain function the way it’s meant to.

If you find this helpful, follow for more myth-busting mental-health education.
