Diabetes doesn’t affect every region equally; some places are hit harder than others.

- About 11–13% of adults in Texas have been diagnosed with diabetes. But San Antonio has one of the highest rates in Texas.

- Rural counties in East and South Texas see even higher rates, often tied to limited access to healthcare and fewer prevention programs.

- Behind every percentage point are real people managing daily challenges with blood sugar, medications, and lifestyle changes. When we see these disparities, we’re reminded that access to early detection and follow-up care can significantly impact outcomes.

Care isn’t just about tests, charts, or prescriptions. It’s about being seen, heard, and understood. It’s the moment someone slows down to listen when questions are answered without rush and when you leave feeling lighter because someone truly cared. That’s what care should feel like. Not just treatment, but connection.

When loneliness starts to weigh on your mind, connection can be the best medicine, and sometimes, that connection comes with fur, feathers, or scales.

Research shows that spending time with pets can:

- Reduce symptoms of anxiety and depression.
- Encourage mindfulness and daily structure
- Provide steady companionship and emotional support.

Pets remind us that care goes both ways. When we nurture them, they quietly help us heal in return.

If you’ve been feeling isolated or mentally drained, a pet can bring more than comfort. They can help rebuild emotional balance, one small moment at a time.

It’s tempting to stop taking medication when you start feeling better but doing so can lead to bigger problems. When you cut treatment short, the strongest bacteria or viruses can survive and adapt. This makes them harder to treat in the future and increases the risk of resistance.

That’s why it’s important to:

- Take every dose as prescribed
- Finish the whole course, even if you feel fine
- Check with your provider before making any changes
- Staying consistent helps protect your health now and in the future.

Feeling awful after that meal? It could be food poisoning. Food poisoning can strike hours or even days after eating contaminated food. This common issue occurs when contaminated food causes symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, or abdominal cramps. Stay safe by following these simple habits:

Cook thoroughly – Use a food thermometer to ensure that meat, poultry, and seafood reach a safe internal temperature.

Refrigerate promptly – Don’t leave cooked food out for more than 2 hours (1 hour if it’s hot out).

Clean regularly – Wash your hands, utensils, and surfaces thoroughly before and after food preparation.

Avoid cross-contamination – Keep raw meat separate from ready-to-eat foods.

Check dates & labels – Discard expired food and don’t ignore funky smells.

When in doubt, throw it out. A few simple steps can save you from days of discomfort.

Most cases are mild and resolve within a few days, but severe symptoms, such as high fever, dehydration, or prolonged illness, may require medical attention.

Summer is just around the corner and with it comes warmer temperatures! It's a great time to prepare to stay safe and healthy in the heat 🌞 Here's your quick guide:

Hydrate: Carry a water bottle and sip throughout the day, even if you don't feel thirsty. Avoid sugary drinks and excessive caffeine or alcohol, which can dehydrate you.

Dress Smart: Opt for light-colored, loose-fitting, and breathable clothing. Think cotton and linen!
Sun Protection is Key: Don't forget sunscreen, hats, and sunglasses to shield your skin and eyes from strong UV rays.

Plan Your Activities: If possible, schedule outdoor activities for the cooler parts of the day, like early morning or late evening.

Know the Signs of Heat-Related Illness: Familiarize yourself with symptoms of heat exhaustion (heavy sweating, dizziness, nausea) and heatstroke (high body temperature, confusion, rapid pulse), and know when to seek help.

Check on Vulnerable Individuals: Keep an eye on children, the elderly, and those with chronic conditions, as they are more susceptible to heat-related illnesses.

You may have heard of GLP-1 in conversations around weight loss, but it’s more than just a buzzword 💉

GLP-1 (glucagon-like peptide-1) is a hormone naturally produced in your body that plays a key role in regulating appetite and blood sugar. It tells your brain when you’re full and helps slow digestion, which can lead to reduced hunger and improved blood sugar control.

Medications that mimic GLP-1, like Semaglutide and others, were initially developed for diabetes management, but many people are now using them under medical supervision to support weight loss and overall metabolic health.

If you’ve been struggling with weight, cravings, or blood sugar issues, GLP-1 medications might be worth exploring.

Mild anxiety is a common experience 🤯 Here are a few gentle strategies you can try to help manage those moments:

Deep Breathing Exercises: Simple techniques like box breathing (inhale for 4, hold for 4, exhale for 4, hold for 4) can calm your nervous system.

Mindful Moments: To quickly distract from racing thoughts and refocus on the present, take a mindful moment to intentionally notice what you are seeing, hearing, smelling, touching, and tasting right now.

Gentle Movement: A short walk or light stretching can help release tension.

If feelings of anxiety become persistent or overwhelming, reaching out to a healthcare professional can provide valuable support and guidance.
