strawberries I'm bringing back to life & a ceramic chicken
from my childhood bedroom.

The marigolds keep an eye on the dahlias, & the verbena judges me as I get nothing from my to-do list done.

My front yard never judges me.

It's full of twinkling mushrooms, finches, & annuals
that live in the moment.

They live by the fleeting season &
breathe in the sun & out the wind.

From the garage, I hear the washing machine
finish its cycle.

I'm not okay. I'm back at the beginning of Spring Break 2020 when Covid started and -- as the kids say now -- crashed out. But life went on. So I did.

I'm trying to remember the plot and remember how I have my own little bubble I can tend to.

That I must tend to.

That many generations have tended to.

Sometimes it looks almost red. Or it will turn the color of old coins. Right now the shadows of clouds are dragging across it, and patches of sunlight are touching down everywhere. White strings of gulls drag over it like beads.

It is my favorite thing, I think, that I have ever seen. Sometimes I catch myself staring at it and forget my duties. It seems big enough to contain everything anyone could ever feel."
