I worked several years at a major cancer center counseling cancer patients & families, as well as individuals & groups in the community. Personalized individual counseling is $50 for introductory session including review of food history/food diary and brief health history as well as overview of dietary strategies and counseling format. Group counseling also available with price varying depending on participants ( can be as low as $15-20).

A recent study published in the International Journal of Epidemiology, found that even relatively moderate amounts of dairy milk consumption can increase women's risk of breast cancer -- up to 80% depending on the amount consumed. I am a retired family nurse practitioner, most recently in Integrative Medicine at M. D. Anderson Cancer Center. I am also trained and experienced in nutrition counselin. • With the COVID-19 cases increasing, it might be important to step up your self-care efforts. Proper diet, regular physical activity, restful sleep, and stress management all play an important role in maintaining a strong immune system to keep viruses and chronic illnesses at bay. A recent study found a strong link between glucose control and COVID-19 outcomes. This was a retrospective, multicenter study, and the largest study thus far of hospitalized patients with pre-existing type 2 diabetes and COVID-19. It found that the presence of type 2 diabetes is a risk factor for worse COVID-19 outcomes, but that better glycemic control was associated with significant reductions in adverse outcomes and death. If you are interested in improving your health status and immune system to reduce your risk of acquiring COVID or achieving a better outcome if you do get it, then consider nutrition counseling by contacting me through messenger or my email.

The American Cancer Society has updated their guidelines for cancer prevention and control. And one of them likely will not be liked by many of us: “It is best not to drink alcohol”. It has been known for several years that alcohol is a carcinogen, but organizations like ACS were reluctant to speak too harshly. The evidence is now more overwhelming, and it is recommended that for many cancers avoiding alcohol is the best approach. Another change in the guidelines is that we need to up our dose of exercise: “Adults should get 150-300 minutes of moderate-intensity physical activity per week, or 75-150 minutes of vigorous-intensity physical activity, or a combination. Getting 300 minutes or even more will give you the most health benefits”.

The fact is, it’s always better to get nutrients from real food rather than from supplements. In a nutrition counseling session, we can talk about what foods are best to support the immune system, when supplements might be needed & why, and other methods to strengthen the immune system. My last adventure prior to Covid-19 travel bans. Lalibela Ethiopia Jan 2020. Photographing the Eastern Orthodox Christian Pilgrims arriving for their Christmas rituals & celebrations at the site of the ancient churches built into the ground at the top of the hills.

Restaurants, bars, beaches, parks, retail stores - many places are opening up and we are eager to get out there and socialize with our friends. But this virus isn’t over yet, so yes, I am still wearing a mask. I do this not just to protect myself, but to protect you too. I feel well, but what if am an asymptomatic carrier? I would feel awful if I knew I gave the virus to you and you became ill, or one of your loved ones died. Or any of the 10 or more people to whom you spread the virus. Or if each of them infected 10 or more people. Please be considerate to all of us, especially our most vulnerable - just in case you are an asymptomatic carrier.

Food Changes Everything. There is evidence that certain dietary strategies and other lifestyle behaviors may help to strengthen the immune system.
Whether your goals are to lose weight, develop a healthy immune system, reduce your risk of chronic diseases (such as diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, cancer or dementia), or to improve your existing health conditions, consider letting me be your health coach. Together we can help you develop a plan to meet your individual needs.
I am a retired Family Nurse Practitioner and Nurse Educator. I received additional education and training in nutrition and have experience in nutrition counseling at a major cancer center as well as through individual and group counseling in private business.
