Spending time outside is one of the best parts of summer, but protecting your skin is important. Sunscreen helps reduce the risk of sunburn and long-term skin damage caused by ultraviolet (UV) rays.

Apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher before going outdoors and reapply every two hours, especially after swimming or sweating. Hats, sunglasses, and shade can also help protect against sun exposure.

Taking simple precautions can help you enjoy summer safely while protecting your health.

Bee stings are common during the warmer months when people spend more time outdoors. Most stings cause mild pain and swelling, but knowing what to do can help reduce discomfort.

🐝 Remove the stinger if it is still in the skin
🐝 Wash the area with soap and water
🐝 Apply a cold pack to reduce swelling and pain

Watch for signs of a severe allergic reaction such as trouble breathing, swelling of the face or throat, dizziness, or widespread hives.

Call 911 immediately if these symptoms occur.

Warmer temperatures bring more outdoor activity, grilling, and time around open flames, which can increase the risk of fires. Taking a few simple precautions can help keep your home and family safe.

Keep grills at least 10 feet away from buildings, never leave a grill unattended while cooking, and make sure campfires are fully extinguished before leaving the area.

Practicing safe habits around fire helps prevent accidents and protects your community. If a fire becomes uncontrollable, call 911 immediately.

Swimming is a great way for kids to stay active during the summer, but water safety should always come first. Drowning can happen quickly and often occurs when supervision lapses, even for a short moment.

Keep young swimmers safe by staying within arm’s reach, using properly fitted life jackets when needed, and making sure children ask permission before entering the water. Active supervision is one of the most important ways to prevent accidents.

If someone is in distress in the water, call 911 immediately and seek help right away.

Texting while driving may only take a few seconds, but those seconds matter.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, sending or reading a text takes your eyes off the road for about 5 seconds.

At 55 mph, that’s like driving the length of an entire football field with your eyes closed.

Before you start driving, silence notifications or put your phone away. If a message is important, pull over safely before responding.

Safe driving protects everyone on the road!

Did you know asphalt and pavement can reach temperatures of 140°F or higher on hot days?

Surfaces like parking lots, sidewalks, and playground areas heat up quickly under direct sunlight.

These temperatures can cause burns to bare feet and can be especially dangerous for children and pets spending time outdoors. Consider testing the pavement with your hand and encouraging shoes when surfaces are hot.

Taking simple precautions can help prevent heat-related injuries during the summer months.

Hot temperatures can increase the risk of dehydration, especially during outdoor activities. Drinking water regularly helps your body stay cool and maintain normal function throughout the day.

Try to drink water before you feel thirsty, take breaks in the shade, and increase fluids during exercise or time spent outside. Children and older adults may be more vulnerable to dehydration in the heat.

Staying hydrated is a simple step that helps keep you safe and healthy during the summer.
