Runner’s knee is one of the most common causes of pain around the kneecap, especially in people who are active. This condition, also known as patellofemoral pain syndrome, develops when there is irritation between the kneecap and the underlying cartilage. If you’re noticing discomfort during running, squatting, going down stairs, or even sitting for long periods, it may be time to get evaluated.
Treatment options include both non-surgical and surgical methods. Non-surgical treatment consists of rest, ice, compression, and elevation (RICE protocol); all assist in controlling pain and swelling. Anti-inflammatory medications may be prescribed to reduce pain.
