Are there any warning signs before someone goes into ?
Interestingly both men & women might experience different signs prior to going into cardiac arrest as per study author Dr. Sumeet Chugh. "Fully 50% of people who experienced a sudden cardiac arrest had a telling symptom 24 hours before, and these symptoms are different in men than women, a new study suggests. For women, the most prominent symptom of an impending sudden cardiac arrest is shortness of breath; for men, it is chest pain and pressure."
As Benjamin Franklin famously advised in 1736 that “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.”

If you find someone unresponsive, no pulse or breathing - call 911 right away & start CPR! If you are in a public place where there is a defibrillator, delegate someone to go get it while you start CPR immediately!
If you have a smartphone, make sure that your voice commands are set to ''on'' so that when you ask "Siri" or ''Hey Google" to call 911 that can help the process of starting CPR expeditiously!
Per American Heart Association ''The location of Out of Hospital Cardiac Arrests (OHCA) most often occurs in homes/residences (73.4%), followed by public settings (16.3%), and nursing homes (10.3%). If performed immediately, CPR can double or triple the chance of survival from an out of hospital cardiac arrest.''

During a CPR BLS (Basic Life Support) training, a participant raised an insightful question: "Is it guaranteed that someone's ribs will be broken if CPR is performed on them?"
Preface the answer by saying, Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) provides a significant increase in survival rate, even if performed by bystanders.
The answer is, as per the National Library of Medicine is ''26.1% had rib fractures & 17.4% were accompanied with sternal fractures.''
''Who performed CPR & where?'
''The place where CPR was performed was the victim’s home in 27.3% of the cases, a public place in 22.7%, and a medical environment in 46.6% of the cases. This means that, in 50% of the cases, CPR was performed in out-of-hospital settings.''
This highlights the importance of knowing CPR!

Workplace Safety Per AHA (American Heart Association)
There are about 10,000 cardiac arrests in the workplace each year in the United States, according to a report from the US Occupational Safety & Health Administration.
Did you know: only 50% of people can locate an automated external defibrillator (AED) at work?
With 10,000 cardiac arrests annually in the workplace, knowing this small piece of information has the potential to save thousands of lives.
Remember, CPR saves lives every day!

PSA For All! This is a common question that we encounter in our classes & it's so important for everyone to know!
What happens if we try our best to save someone but it doesn't go as planned??
Answer = Texas Good Samaritan Laws
All 50 states have some form of Good Samaritan Law on the books. This law provides liability protection to bystanders who come to the aid of people in need. For example, if you witness a cardiac arrest at a local shopping mall, and you try—in good faith—to revive the person using the mall’s publicly accessible AED, you won’t have to worry about being sued just because the attempt was unsuccessful or because the victim had a do-not-resuscitate (DNR) order in place.
Texas’s good Samaritan law is covered under Texas Civil Practice and Remedies Code § 74.152:
Persons not licensed or certified in the healing arts who in good faith administer emergency care as emergency medical service personnel are not liable in civil damages for an act performed in administering the care unless the act is willfully or wantonly negligent. This section applies without regard to whether the care is provided for or in expectation of remuneration.
The term “willfully or wantonly negligent” is somewhat ambiguous, but it generally refers to reckless behavior that falls outside the scope of how a reasonably intelligent person would be expected to behave in the same situation.
The good news is that automated external defibrillators (AED's) are programmed with calm, clear voice instructions. So as long as you just follow along with each step and do exactly as instructed, you’re doing your due diligence.

Where do 80% of cardiac arrests happen?
The location of Out of Hospital Cardiac Arrests (OHCA) most often occurs in homes/residences (73.4%), followed by public settings (16.3%), and nursing homes (10.3%).
Next time you’re in a stressful situation, try box breathing. This mindful breathing technique can help you stay focused and alert, yet calm.
👉 Inhale through the nose for four counts.
👉 Hold your breath for four more.
👉 Exhale for the next four.
👉 Hold for four more

A few days ago, in one of our CPR classes, a student asked, "how many people in America know how to do CPR?"
The Answer = 54 percent
Without prompt CPR, death from cardiac arrest can occur in minutes. Yet only about half of Americans — 54 percent, according to a nationally representative survey by the Cleveland Clinic — say they know how to do CPR.
Let's be a part of the solution with the goal being 100% of people knowing CPR!

Are you aware of the signs of heat emergencies? As temperatures in continue to soar above 100 degrees, it's important to stay informed. According to Medical News Today , the primary causes of heat-related emergencies are environmental factors and dehydration. If you suspect heat exhaustion, move to a cool, shaded location, remove clothing, and drink fluids. Feeling nauseous or vomiting? Seek medical attention immediately. And if you or someone you know exhibits symptoms of heatstroke, such as a high body temperature or confusion, contact emergency services right away. Stay cool and stay safe this summer.
At CPR Center of Houston we strongly encourage everyone to drink water or an electrolyte drink as often as possible. Sometimes we might forget to drink and in that case we can set a hydration break alarm on our phones every 15 minutes to avoid .
