Improving gait and balance is key to building confidence and mobility as an amputee. 🦿🏋️‍♂️ Here are 3 simple at-home exercises to help strengthen your skills:

1. Weight Shifting - Purpose: Builds confidence in balance and helps improve weight distribution.

Steps:

- Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart, holding onto a stable surface (e.g., a countertop or sturdy chair) for support.
- Shift your weight slowly from your prosthetic limb to your sound limb and back.
- Hold the position for 5–10 seconds before switching.
- Repeat for 10–15 reps per side.
Progression: Once comfortable, try shifting weight without holding on to support.

2. Heel-to-Toe Walking
Purpose: Enhances gait and strengthens balance by simulating a natural walking pattern.

Steps:

- Clear a straight path and stand tall.
- Step forward with one foot, placing the heel of the stepping foot directly in front of the toes of the stationary foot.
- Repeat with the opposite foot, maintaining a straight line as you walk.
- Take 10–12 steps, turn around, and repeat.
Tip: Use a hallway or a wall for light support if needed.

3. Single-Leg Stands - Purpose: Improves strength and balance on the prosthetic limb.

Steps:

- Stand next to a countertop or sturdy surface for support.
- Shift your weight onto your prosthetic leg and lift the opposite leg slightly off the ground.
- Hold the position for 5–15 seconds, or as long as possible without discomfort.
- Lower the leg and repeat 5–10 times, then switch sides.
Progression: Try holding for longer durations or reducing reliance on support.

Remember to start slow, stay consistent, and always prioritize safety! 💪
