October is Community Helper Month! HPDS would like to THANK the many preschools who have invited us in to speak with their students about how "the Dentist" can be their community helper! We speak with them about going to see the Dentist but also about how important it is for them to take good care of their teeth and bodies by following good dental habits (Brushing and Flossing daily), by choosing healthy snacks that are low in sugar, and by drinking lots of water between meals and with any sugary treats! It's been a month full of fun and so many BEAUTIFUL SMILES !!!!!

FEBRUARY IS CHILDREN'S DENTAL HEALTH MONTH!!
Several Preschools and Elementary Schools in our area have graciously invited us to speak with their students about starting and maintaining GOOD DENTAL HABITS such as... BRUSHING 2 TIMES EACH DAY (morning after breakfast and at night before bedtime) and FLOSSING ONE TIME EACH DAY (once the teeth touch side to side). We also talk about which foods are HEALTHY SNACK CHOICES, drinking WATER with our snacks, and why sugary snacks and drinks are not healthy for our teeth or our bodies, as well as what to expect when they go for a DENTAL CHECKUP 2 TIMES EACH YEAR! We are absolutely WILD about coming to speak with these precious kiddos and look forward to this special time each year!!!! šŸ˜ŠšŸ„•šŸŽ

Halloween is here! This often means bags of free candy (and a chance to build a stockpile of sweets for the winter). Halloween can present parents with a variety of health and dental challenges. Eating candy on Halloween is OK but it’s important to have a plan.
Here's how you can help your family stay MouthHealthy this Halloween (and year-round)
1) Eat Halloween candy (and other sugary foods) with meals or shortly after mealtime. Saliva production increases during meals which helps cancel out acids produced by bacteria in your mouth and rinse away food particles.
2) Avoid hard candy and sticky sweets and don’t SNACK on sweets. How often you snack and the length of time sugary food is in your mouth greatly increases the risk of tooth decay
3) Drink WATER and avoid sugary beverages including soda, sports drinks and flavored waters. Drinking fluoridated water can help prevent tooth decay.
4) Limit the amount of candy you keep around the house. Pick out favorite candies and consider donating the remainder. Think about SUGARLESS GUM as a treat instead of candy. Chewing sugarless gum for 20 minutes after meals helps reduce tooth decay, because increased saliva flow helps wash out food and neutralize the acid produced by bacteria.
5) Brush at least twice each day for two minutes and floss daily. Keeping teeth clean and plaque free is vital to good oral health.
8) If it has been more than 6 months since your child’s last checkup, please call our office to schedule an appointment. Regular dental cleanings and exams enable us to catch any developing problems early, thereby making them easier to ā€œtreatā€!

Happy Springtime Everyone!
Hope everyone had an excellent Easter! Perhaps there is a bit more candy around the house these days! Try to limit the "kiddos" to one piece a day and have them eat it immediately following a meal! Don't forget to brush those beautiful smiles each morning and especially well before bedtime!!!

All of Us at HPDS are hoping that you all are recovering from the Winter Storm last week and that everyone is healthy and safe!
Dental Health Month was a bit CRAZY but to continue with some great Tooth Care Tips....
FLOSSING HELPS TEETH AND GUMS!
By age 2, daily flossing is preferred. It removes food and plaque from between the teeth. (Plaque is the sticky yellow substance that forms on teeth after eating things like bread, raisins, cookies and cake and drinking milk or soda.) Bacteria grows on the plaque and forms an acid that leads to tooth decay and gum irritation, bleeding, and disease.
• Be gentle while flossing! Keep the floss against the side of the tooth while gently gliding it between the teeth. Forcing the floss between teeth can ā€œpopā€ the gum tissue which can scare children into thinking that flossing hurts (it shouldn’t). Young children need help flossing – especially in the molar area. Sometimes it is much easier to floss your child’s teeth on the bed or couch with their head on your lap – give it a try!
• Floss aids are very effective for flossing children’s teeth. They generally easier for children to use and come in many fun shapes and colors!
• Flossing while in braces can be tricky but should be done! We are always happy to demonstrate this at your next visit and give tips that help!

February is Dental Health Month!
We want to share some dental health tips with you -our dental family- throughout the month!
Tip #1
"Two" is the magic number when it comes to healthy teeth. Dentists recommend brushing a minimum of twice a day – after breakfast and just before bedtime – for at least two minutes. Since that can be a very long time for children here are some fun suggestions to keep them going:
• Pick a song that’s about two minutes long and sing it during toothbrush time. Or, play two minutes of a tune from the radio or a child’s favorite CD. Use the first 60 seconds for the top teeth and the other 60 seconds for the bottom teeth.
• Place a timer in the bathroom, one that indicates minutes and seconds, or even an old-fashioned egg timer that uses sand.
• Get a brush that lights up or flashes a light for 60 seconds at a time. There are some very affordable options available!

Wishing a Very Happy Halloween from our families to Yours!!! DON'T FORGET TO BRUSH !!!
