"This presentation explores the benefits of a weight-inclusive approach in dietetic practice with adolescents. Instead of focusing on weight loss or BMI, this method emphasizes holistic well-being, body respect, and behavior-based outcomes. Key topics include:
(1) developmental changes during adolescence that make weight-centric messaging potentially harmful;
(2) Health at Every Size principles like intuitive eating, joyful movement, and self-care;
and (3) how weight-focused interventions may lead to disordered eating, low self-esteem, and healthcare avoidance.
Practical strategies for building trust, using neutral language, and setting goals around energy, mood, and lifestyle will be discussed. The importance of cultural sensitivity and inclusivity will be highlighted to support diverse body types and backgrounds. The goal is to empower dietitians to help adolescents and families build positive relationships with food and body image while reducing risks linked to weight stigma.
